Everything was dark when I opened my eyes, my leg shaking. I closed them, hoping it will go away. Lately, I've been wanting everything to go away. Everything and everyone, but this one wouldn't.
"Daddy, wake up." Mason's little voice asks, now shaking my shoulder.
I remove the covers from my head, my face exposed to the sunlight coming through the blinds. I squint and run my hands over my face, yawning deeply as I looked over at my son who was standing next to me.
"Mm, good morning buddy," I mumbled.
"Daddy, it's 9:35. Papa said to wake up so we can all go to the carnival!" Mason exclaims, making me wince.
"Right, right. Uh, let me just get up. I'll be ready in a bit," I say a ruffle his hair, giving him a small smile.
Mason returns the smile and runs out of my room happily. I can hear his little feet patter until he gets to the bottom of the stairs. I drag myself out of bed and sleepily make my way to the bathroom.
My reflection stares right back at me. I can see the bags under my eyes, how pale my face looks. I splash some water and rub the sleep from my eyes, soon drying off. Once I get dressed, I make my way to the kitchen, where everyone else is seated. Phil hands me a cup of coffee with a straight face.
"Look who finally got up," He says and turns around place his empty mug in the sink.
I grumble and take a sip, my face scrunching with distaste. The sweet liquid was gross, a small frown forming on my lips.
"Phil, you know I don't like sugar in my coffee," I say quietly and he just sighs annoyingly.
"Get over it, Daniel. Come on kids, lets get in the car." Phil says, motioning for the two to follow him.
Trinity looks back at me before following her dad outside. I hear the car start and I close my eyes, dumping the drink down the drain and walking outside, locking up the house. I walk over to the car and get inside, buckling up. There was a blanket of awkward silence that covered the car, shielding all of us from the world around us. I go to turn on the radio, Phil doing the same. I look over at him, a gentle smile on my face. His eyes soften as he moves his hand away, allowing me to change the station.
"Thin Line Between Love and Hate" by The Persuaders plays through the speakers, making me frown. I didn't bother changing it as the tune played, listening to the lyrics.
"She may be holding something deep inside that'll really, really hurt you one day."

"Daddy! Papa! Let's go on this one!" Mason exclaims, pointing at the roller coaster.
"Bubba, you have to be a big kid to go on it," Phil says, picking him up, causing the boy to frown.
"Can I go on it, Dad?" Trinity asks, looking at me excitedly.
"Of course! Phil, watch Mason while I take Trin, please?" I ask and he nods, smiling
Trinity and I walk over to the line of people waiting for the ride. We stand for about twenty minutes before we get to the gate, looking down and seeing Mason smiling at us, giving us a thumbs up. I chuckle and we both get on, locking the railing to us.
The ride went super fast. There were loops and quick turns. Trinity kept screaming, her arms up as the wind went through our hair. We came to a stop, her looking at me a smiling. She grabbed my hand before we plummeted down, raising our arms. I'll admit, I did scream a bit, but it was so much fun. My stomach was in a knot as we came t a stop, the handle bar lifting and my shaky legs taking me off of the ride.
