CURRENTLY, ALL THE BOYS I LOVE in my life consist's of three boys.
1. My Dad
2. My Brother, Sam
3. My Bestfriend, Brenton
These past few years I've only ever loved three people in my life, which happen to be boys. The list was longer when Mom was alive.
My mother, always said that love at first sight did exist. She had said that she loved my Dad the moment she laid eyes on him. I never argued with her, I'm sure she liked to romanticise the idea of love for the sake of romanticising love.
She died when I was eleven, these past six years I can't say I've ever experienced love at first sight. I'm a realist, she was a hopeless romantic.
I think my Dad is a bit of a hopeless romantic too. He had to be because of Mom. He's never looked or dated another woman since Mom died. I wonder sometimes if he ever gets lonely. He still kisses her photograph before each football game for good luck and buys tulips, her favourite flowers, for the house every anniversary.
My Brother and I were the opposite of Dad, we didn't believe in phrases like meant to be or if fate chooses. We always believed that things weren't meant to be, you forced things to be. We never believed so much in fate, more like your decisions shape 'fate.'
Sometimes I wondered if my brother believed in true love. It was never something we discussed. We didn't speak of Mom, she was a silent love and morning we both shared. Love wasn't something we discussed, at least not after Mom died.
"Foul!" I yell at the referee who obviously favours the the other team over the one my brother is on. He sends me a dirty look, as if to say what would I know about football.
Really what wouldn't I know about football? That's what happens when you live with two guys for the past six years and have a best friend who is also a boy for the past eight.
My Dad chuckles. "You need to settle down sweetheart."
I huff and sit back down. "It's not my fault the referee doesn't know how to referee!" I speak in a loud voice, so I know I can be heard.
