There were nights where Cas woke up screaming, drenched in sweat and eyes filled with fear. The brother's would often come racing down the hall awoken by his frantic yelling, sitting with him until they could reassure him he was safe, that no one could get to him there. Sometimes upon waking from a nightmare, he wouldn't realize he was awake, and throw anything in reach at Sam and Dean as they came rushing in. Needless to say, they stopped letting Cas take glass into his room.
It happened again, for the third night in a row, at some time around 2:36 AM. Dean shot straight up out of bed, a dreadful feeling in his gut settling as the screams rang in his ears. The covers were thrown from his legs and he got to his door as fast as he could, peaking his head out. He and Sam exchanged looks, before both started taking off down the hall.
They managed to calm him down. Cas was curled up at the bed's headboard, hugging his knees. Sam and Dean stood at the door way, exchanging looks and words in hushed tones.
"He's probably not going to get back to bed."
"Yeah... You're right..."
"Who's going to stay with him?"
Dean cast Cas a look, rubbing the back of his neck as he looked back to his brother.
"I will, I guess."
"Guys?"
They turned to the groggy voice to see a not-well rested Kevin Tran peeking in the room.
"How is he?"
Dean shook his head a little, giving Kevin a look.
"He'll hold up... Where've you been, anyways? If I didn't know better, I'd say you were dead. What're you, nocturnal or something?"
Kevin laughed a little, shaking his head.
"Sleeping. Well... When I can. Cas has kinda... Been keeping me up lately."
Dean looked back in at Cas, then down at his feet.
"Yeah. You and I both."
Kevin and Sam returned to their rooms, leaving Dean and Cas to themselves. The springs creaked as Dean seated himself on the edge of the bed, casting Cas a glance. It was almost funny to Dean how child-like Cas had become upon turning mortal. He was a picky-eater, he damn-near refused to shower, he liked to curl up with blankets on the couch and watch cartoons, and he liked his crusts cut off the sandwich.
A shadow of the fierce warrior he once was, in only a few weeks' time. Maybe it should've been sad, but Dean didn't see a difference either way. Cas was Cas, broken or not. He leaned against the headboard, Dean glancing at Cas, and Cas glancing at Dean.
"How about you lay down, Cas. Get some rest. You need it."
Cas shook his head, looking over at Dean with tiredly drooping blue eyes. Dean gave him a little smile.
"I'll stay here."
The angel shot him a distrustful glare.
"... Promise?"
"Yeah, promise."
Castiel hesitantly got beneath the covers, Dean shifting to make more room. It was quiet after that-the only thing to break the silence Cas's soft, shallow breaths. Looking down at Cas, Dean felt it. All the feelings for Cas he'd been pushing back for so long, for too long. Looking down at Cas, he realized just how Goddamn beautiful he was. His lashes, his lips, his everything. He didn't know what it was, but it hit, and it hit hard.
He hadn't just realized just how much until then, but Cas drove him crazy. He wanted to hold him, he wanted to kiss him. He wanted Cas to feel just how much Dean loved him, because Dean, Dean loved Cas so fucking much, and he could hardly stand it.
***I. Am. So. So. So. Very. Sorry. Not only is this not longer (as I say practically every chapter that the next will be), this took me over a week to update. I felt really bad, and I thought about it frequently, if not everyday. I've had a really bad writer's block (and this chapter is probably crap because of it), but after receiving a comment saying, "please update soon," a few days back, it kind of inspired me a little, the little spark I needed to light the flame, you could say, and there's nothing greater than the feeling you get when you realize there's people who look forward to reading what you post. It feels sooo nice to have finally gotten something up. :] And also, I hope the romance in this chapter wasn't rushed or at all sudden. I figured, "Hey, it's Chapter Eleven in my Destiel fanfiction, let's put some Destiel in!" But let's face it, it's after season eight, and Cas and Dean had fallen for one another way back in season four. I've being doing a Destiel RP and that really helped me get back in gear, too. So thank you to all who helped me get back on track. :]***
