After the first week being a runaway, I realized how hard it was. I had lost so much weight. My hair was mangled and dry. My hands were chapped, my teeth were stained yellow. I hoped that someone would help me but surprisingly no one came. What a cruel world I thought. Each Day I had to get samples, I bought cheap items with my $30 dollars. To be honest, life was hell right now.

After the month of November was over, I had this strange feeling that someone was going to help me. On December 5th a man came into my life. He was about to bring groceries to his car. "Hey there." He said walking up to me. I was shy and scared at first. "Hi." I said. "How old are you?" he asked. "I turned fifteen last week.." I said. "Fifteen? Wow, I remember when I was fifteen. What are you doing out here all alone?" He asked. "Um...I ran away." I said. "Oh dear." He said frowning. He took off his gloves and put them on my hands. "This might seem weird but...do - would you like to come live with me and my family?" He asked. "Are you joking?" I asked. "No jokes, I'm a serious man." He said winking and patting my hand. "Thank you so much!" I said crying. He helped me up and brought my things to the car. When I got in, I was greeted by the heater and sunk into the seat. His car smelled like cinnamon. He put the groceries and my suitcase in the back and got in the front and we pulled off.
"I apologize for not greeting myself properly, I'm Robert Metts. You are?" He asked. "Oh..Caelen Hicks.." I said in a whisper. "Caelen, what a name! I have 5 other children at the house so, I hope you don't mind." He said. "What's their names?" I asked. We came to a red light, and he tapped on the steering wheel. "Let's see...we have Alyson, Kobe, Angel, Tyler, and Ricky. They're all adopted- well not Alyson, she's my real daughter." He said. "Sounds like a lovely family." I said. "Oh boy..so why did you run away?" He asked while the light turned green. "My parents..were abusive." I said. "Oh I'm so sorry! At least you're here now with us, the Metts family." He said. I said nothing for the remainder of the car ride. Finally we reached his house. It was HUGE. "Stay put, I gotta talk to my wife." He said. He got the groceries out and went inside the house. It was a good fifteen minutes before he and a beautiful women with long blonde hair came out. She motioned for me to come out the car. So I did.
"Hi! I'm Elaine, my you're a lovely girl! Robert told me you're a runaway correct?" she asked. I nodded my head. "Don't worry, we'll take good care of you, and we can adopt you." she said smiling. "So what do you say, are you a Metts?" Robert asked.
I thought long and hard ...
"Yes." I said smiling.
