Think About the Future

Perrie had met Jade on career day. Jade had been so eager to attend, whereas Perrie just wanted to get the hell out of school.

Perrie remembered trying to sneak out of some back doors when everyone was going to the main assembly to start off the day.

Perrie was one of those kids that didn’t give a shit about the future. She lived in the now and whatever happened later on would happen. She didn’t see the point of planning things out. How was she supposed to know what career she wanted? She was still in high school anyways.

Perrie remembered how triumphant she felt when she snuck around the corner of the school. She was getting away with ditching, which wasn’t anything new to her, but she was glad she pulled it off today. She wasn’t sure how she would have been able to handle a whole day of just talking about jobs and the future. She couldn’t wait to brag about pulling this off to all of her friends.

Just as Perrie was about to pull a cig out from her back pocket, she felt a hand clamp down on her shoulder.

Oh shit..

“Where do you think you’re going miss Edwards?”

Perrie didn’t even have to turn around to know that it was the school police officer who had caught her. She had heard his voice enough times to be able to recognize it instantly. Perrie wasn’t exactly the perfect student, so she often found herself in his office. They were sort of friends now. Perrie turned around to face him.

“Well…It’s career day isn’t it? You and I both know by now sir that I won’t be working, so you know, I’m just practicing that now.”

“Perrie, I have known you for quite some time now. Sure, you might be extremely lazy and not motivated to do anything, but underneath all that, I know you have one of the most brilliant minds at this school. I’m making it my goal to get you to reconsider your future, because if you take the appropriate steps, I know you’ll have a bright one.”

Perrie just shrugged the officer’s hand off of her shoulder and muttered, “Bullshit,” under her breath. He heard it though.

“No, I’m serious. Now come with me, you have a career day to attend.”

The officer led Perrie back into the school, and she just wanted to punch a wall because she had been so damn close to escaping for the day. Now she was going to have to suffer through classes all day about a future that she didn’t want to think about.

“Well Perrie, it looks like you’ve managed to miss the beginning assembly. Everyone’s off now looking at programs that interest them. So tell me, what sort of job could you see yourself having?”

The thing was, Perrie knew exactly what sort of job she wanted in the future, she just didn’t want to admit it. She wasn’t the type of person that you would picture wanting this sort of job, plus her and her friends were supposed to be the sort that didn’t give a fuck and just smoked and drank all the time. She wanted to stick to the status quo.

Perrie just shrugged and stared at the tiles on the floor.

“Come on Perrie, you have to do something. Just tell me what interests you and we’ll find you something.”

“Is there a class for bartending? Or something that requires alcohol?”

“Perrie, cut the shit. I can tell deep down you do care. Just tell me. It’s me. I’m just officer Robinns. I won’t judge you.”

Perrie was actually really thankful for him. Even though she was always rebelling and causing trouble, he never got angry with her and he was always trying to help her.
