I was laying on the sun soaked ground in southern California. Sitting
next to me was one of my best friends from growing up, Nick Jonas.
(Insert screaming teenage girls here, right?) I grew up living next
door to the Jonas family since I was 7. Now 10 years later Nick and I
had grown ever closer even though he was constantly on tour and busy
with other band things. But this summer though I'd been invited to
spend the summer with the guys. Which is why I was laying in he sun
while Nick strummed on his guitar. It wasn't anything in particular but
he was trying to get inspiration for a new song, something I was
finding out wasn't going to well for him at the moment. I smiled as he
began to strum out my favorite song Lovebug. I put my arm over my eyes
to block out the sun while I listened to him play. The strumming
suddenly stopped. I removed my arm and looked at him.
"What happened to the music?" I teased. But when I saw his face the
joke was instantly gone. He was starig at me intently.
"What is it? Is there a bee or a bug on my face or something?" I began
to swat around my head trying to frighten off any bugs nearby. He
suddenly laughed at me.
"No bugs. Don't worry. I just...uh...got distracted." he said suddenly
looking down at his guitar. I looked at him with my right eyebrow
raised.
"Did something shiny catch your eye or something?" the teasing had
returned. I have a hard time not being sarcastic in situations that
are kind of awkward or sentimental.
"Yeah something like that."
"So I've been here a week and we haven't done much but sit around the
house. Isn't there anything to do here?" I asked. We seriously hadn't
left the house besides to come to the backyard in a week.
"What do you want to do?" he asked.
"Anything that's not here." I replied.
"Well Mandy there's not much we can do without getting mobbed you
know." He said.
"Dang it. Why do you have to be so famous and cute?" I said. He
grinned at me like he had at the airport earlier this week. I of
course was the last person off the plane because at my 5' height no
one ever cares to let me go before them. Nick and his brothers had to
have been waiting in the airport for at least an hour. How they
managed it without getting mobbed by teenage girls I'll never know.
But the smile Nick gave me I probably will never forget. When I
finally was able to make my way into the actual building of LAX Nick
saw me and smiled largely and practically ran to take my bag and set
it on the floor and swing me into his arms for a hug.
"I missed you Manny." He had told me, along with the usage of my
childhood nickname. It had struck me as odd that he told me he'd
missed me. He never did. But I didn't mind because I was very pleased
that he'd said so anyways.
"What are you thinking about?" Nick asked, bringing me back from my
daydream.
"Oh just when you picked me up from the airport last week." I said
plainly.
"What about it?" He asked.
"Nothing in particular." I tried to sound nonchalant but it probably
didn't work, Nick grinned at me knowingly. He knew exactly what I was
thinking about. I stuck my tongue out at him and laid back down.
