Chapter 2
My summer was being counted not by days but by hours. I knew it was
all too fast for my liking. Whole days went by where we did absolutely
nothing. Then others were a rush of photo shoots for the guys or
interviews. It was the middle of summer when the guys had a concert in
the heart of L.A. I would say it was a small event. But they are the
Jonas Brothers, who have the most committed fan base since The
Beatles, so a small event wasn't even feasible. Nick had taken me out
to get a new dress, something I really didn't want him to do.
"Really Nick? I have a perfectly good dress that I brought with me. I
don't need you to buy me another one." I kept trying to argue. But in
the end I had one more thing that I would have to squeeze in my
suitcase to go home and Nick had a smug smile on his face. The dress
was a typical little black dress and on my small 5' frame it looked
fabulous. Okay so I love the dress but that doesn't mean I'm happy he
spent money on it. It came to just above my knees and hugged
everything. I mean there was no need for an imagination with this
dress. The top was heart shaped and the cap sleeves connected to the
dress under my arms and the back was made of lace that V-ed down to
the small of my back. Nick even had the nerve to buy some bright red
pumps to go with it behind my back. He stole one of my shoes out of
the dressing room while I was trying on dresses and went to the shoe
department. But in the end I found it sweet I guess. When I came down
to leave with the boys to the concert Nick about keeled over - along
with his brothers. I'd found my tube of glossy red lipstick in my
purse and did a darker smokey eye than my normal make-up. I had no
necklace or any other jewelry, mostly because I didn't have any thing
that looked good with it. And I wanted the dress to be the only
accessory.
"Do I look okay?" I said when I reached the bottom of the stairs. I
did a slow turn to show off the dress.
"You look amazing, sweetie!" Mrs. Jonas said coming into the room
dressed to go too. I smiled and looked down, suddenly nervous. Nick
hadn't said anything yet. Had he changed his mind about liking the
dress? My hand went self consciously to my neck. I'd curled the
normally long hair and swept it back to the nape of my neck.
"So are we going to this thing or what?" I said finally looking up at
Nick. He was staring at me, I took it as a good sign when he seemed to
visibly shake himself back to reality. I made my hand leave my neck
and to hold my little black clutch purse in front of me.
"Let's get moving everyone!" Mr. Jonas said coming into the room with
Frankie right by his side. "Mandy, you look pretty tonight." I smiled
a thank you. Mr. Jonas led the way out the door with his wife beside
him. Frankie right behind them and then Kevin and Joe following. Nick
hung back to walk out with me.
"You look beautiful. Sorry it took me a few minutes to say so, I was a
little stunned is all." Nick said with a shy smile.
"Thank you. For the dress too. I know I was kind of a stickler about
it." Nick put his hand on the small of my back as he led me out into
the afternoon air to the waiting limo that his family had already
packed into. The guys still had some sound checks and band stuff to do
before the concert later that night so early afternoon was the latest
we were allowed to leave. Nick sat beside me quietly the entire ride,
his hand never let mine go.
