Going to Hogwarts

Nick held his two copies of his father's book close to his chest as he leaned out the window and waved to his parents. He could still hear their thoughts clearly despite the jumble of thoughts from everyone else on the platform. A smile spread across his face. Both of them were worried for him. His mother was afraid he'd be bullied for being different while his father was afraid he wouldn't make any friends. But, even though they were both worried for their son, they were even more worried about how the other would take it.

When the train had pulled away from the platform and he could no longer see his parents, Nick sat down and opened the battered blue book in his hands. A slip of paper fluttered to the ground. He picked it up and examined it. It was a rough sketch of a Thunderbird in mid-flight. Smiling, he tucked the paper back into the book and set it on the seat beside him.

The door to the compartment slid open and a boy with dirty-blond hair came in. He dropped into the seat across from Nick and started out the window.

"I thought I saw Newt Scamander on the platform."

"You did see him," Nick said without looking up. He had picked up the red copy of the book when the boy had sat down and was flipping through it.

"What?" Nick looked up to see the boy staring at him, his thoughts mirroring his shocked expression. With a start, Nick realized his mistake.

He didn't say anything.

Realizing that it was too late to correct himself, Nick acted as if nothing unusual had happened. "You thought you saw Newt Scamander because you did see him," he said.

"Oh, I just didn't realize I said that out loud."

Nick stared at the boy who had turned back to the window. He was torn between his mother's thoughts and his father's thoughts. His father thought that he shouldn't do anything to stand out. That included telling people about his Legilimency, though he hadn't mentioned it out loud. On the other hand, his mother thought he should be open with people and admit he was different because "most kids your age won't even care".

Mum knows more about this. She's the one who grew up with Aunt Queenie.

"Oh, I might as well tell you," Nick started.

The boy turned to face him. "Tell me what?"

"You didn't actually say anything about Newt Scamander."

"Then how --"

"I'm a Legilimens. I got it from my mother's sister, I suppose."

"A Legilimens! Really?" the boy exclaimed.

Nick grinned. "Most people don't even know what that means."

The boy shrugged. "Can you really read minds?"

"Of course."

"What's my name?"

"Sebastian Parker." Nick paused. "You know quite a lot about our world for a Muggleborn."

"My sister is a witch. I spent the last three summers looking through her books. My favorite was Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." He pointed to the book in Nick's lap. Nick felt himself blush. Sebastian didn't notice.

"So, you say Newt Scamander was on the platform. I didn't know he had any kids."

"He has a son. His name's Nicholas Scamander."

"Oh." Sebastian frowned slightly. "By the way, what's your name?"

Nick grinned. "Nicholas Scamander."

Sebastian's jaw dropped. "Newt Scamander is your father?"

"Yep."

Sebastian continued to stare at Nick, hundreds of questions flashing through his mind. Nick let out a laugh.

"That's a lot of questions. I don't even know where to start."

"Can we be friends?"

"Of all the questions, that's the one you ask first?"

"Well, yeah. So can we?"

"Yes, of course," Nick laughed. "If you don't mind not having any secrets, that is."

"You said your name was Nicholas?"

Nick nodded. "You can call me Nick."

"I go by Ian."

"I know," Nick grinned.

Ian pointed to the books beside Nick. "I see you've got a copy of Fantastic Beasts but what's the blue book?"

"It's the second edition of the book. I'd let you see it but it's my mom's and it really old. It's full of all her notes and sketches and it's starting to fall apart."

"The second edition?" Ian stared at Nick.

"My mom let me borrow it. I knew she wouldn't let me borrow the first one so I didn't bother asking for it. It's the first copy ever printed and it's the only edition my dad illustrated so it's really special to her."

"Who illustrated the rest, then?" Ian asked.

"My mom. She's always drawing magical creatures on scraps of paper." Nick tapped the blue cover of the book beside him. "This book alone is full of bits of paper with Occamies, Nifflers, or Thunderbirds drawn on them."

"That's so cool!" Ian exclaimed.

Nick grinned and waited as Ian sorted through all his questions, trying to decide which one to ask next. As he told Ian more about himself and learned more about him, Nick couldn't keep the smile off his face.

Maybe Hogwarts won't be so bad, he thought. I've already found a friend and we're not even there yet. Mum and Dad will be glad to know that they worried for nothing. I'll miss them, but I think school will be fun.

A/N: I'm back! I know it's been forever but school started and I can't even get myself to do my homework. I also didn't really like this idea. That's why it's so short. Hopefully, the next one will be longer.

I've been working on a couple of Star Wars fanfictions that I was wondering if I should post. Just let me know if you think I should, though it would be on my other account. What do you think?

Hopefully, I'll be writing more often now that school has been going on and I've made myself a schedule. Anyway, if you liked the chapter, please vote and comment.

Bye!
