Tina sat back, staring at the mountain of papers that still needed to be dealt with. She rubbed her eyes. It was long past time for her to go home but she had stayed late, trying to make progress. It hadn't helped.
I'd better get home before Queenie starts getting worried, she thought. She grabbed her wand from where it lay on her desk. With a flick of her wrist, she sent the stack of folders flying into a drawer of her desk.
Leaving her office, she made her way to the elevator which carried her up to the entrance of MACUSA. She left the building and realized it was slowly getting dark. Having made her way to an out-of-sight corner she Disapparated, appearing in a dark alley near her apartment.
Tina groaned and rubbed her right shoulder. It was still very sore from an injury she had received on a mission the week before. Every time she Apparated it started aching even more.
She let out a long breath and began making her way out of the alley. However, she had only taken a few steps before three figures appeared at the entrance to the alley and stumbled towards her.
"What do we have here?" one of the men said.
Before Tina could process what was happening they had reached her and one of them had grabbed her by the left wrist. Another brought his face close to hers.
"What's a pretty thing like you doing in a place like this?" he said. His speech was slurred and Tina could smell the alcohol on his breath. She gagged and tried to pull away but she bumped into the third man. Turning slightly, she stumbled backward, her back hitting the wall. She winced as her shoulder came in contact with the bricks.
"Where do you think you're going?"
Tina still didn't speak. She instinctively reached for her wand but she knew she couldn't use it, not if she wanted to keep her job. Letting go of her wand, she tried to punch the first man in the stomach in the hopes that he would release her wrist and she could escape. But she couldn't get any strength behind her punch; her shoulder was already hurting too much for that.
She gasped as the third man grabbed her forearm. He pulled it back. Tina couldn't stop the scream as pain shot through her shoulder. Tears were forming in her eyes.
"Hey!" A voice came from the end of the alley. "Leave her alone!"
The first two men released her and started towards the man who had spoken. However, the third man still had a firm grip on her right arm and had twisted it behind her back.
The pain was now unbearable. Tina was fighting to remain conscious. She couldn't see clearly and couldn't make out who this fourth person was.
The two men had reached him and he had wasted no time punching one of them in the face. The second man dodged a punch and darted towards his opponent. Suddenly, he collapsed in a heap on the ground. The man who had been hit also lunged forward but he too crumpled to the ground before reaching the man.
Tina stared at the man, trying to make out his features but all she could see was his blurred figure. His arm was outstretched and he seemed to be holding . . .
A wand?
That was Tina's last clear thought because, at that moment, the man holding her had pulled her in front of him by her right arm and was using her as a shield. She cried out again as pain shot through her.
As Tina struggled not to lose consciousness she was vaguely aware of the man coming in her direction. The man holding her stiffened, releasing her and falling over. She collapsed to the ground herself and completely blacked out.
When Tina came around, she was lying in a soft bed. The pain in her shoulder had subsided and it was now just aching slightly. She opened her eyes slowly and found herself looking at the wooden ceiling of a dimly lit room.
She carefully pushed herself into a sitting position, swinging her feet off the bed. The room she was in was tiny and nearly bare. The only things in it were the bed and a small wooden dresser. There wasn't much room for anything else.
Tina gingerly rubbed her sore shoulder as she tried to remember what had happened.
That man rescued me and I think he had a wand.
Suddenly panicked, she dug her hand in her pocket and groped about for her wand. When her fingers closed around the familiar smooth wood of her wand's handle she relaxed.
Tina stood up slowly and carefully took a step forward. Just then, the door opened and someone came inside. Tina gasped.
"Newt!" she exclaimed. She stumbled and nearly fell but Newt was there in an instant. He caught her by the elbows and steadied her. She gripped the sleeves of his coat to keep herself from falling.
"What happened to you?" Newt asked worriedly. "You were completely unconscious."
"My -- my shoulder," Tina explained. "It was injured last week. The man was twisting my arm around and the pain -- the pain was unbearable. I passed out."
"Oh, Tina," Newt breathed. He gently pulled her into a hug. "I'm so glad I found you when I did."
Tina buried her face in his coat to keep him from seeing her tears but he seemed to know. "Shh . . ." He gently ran his hand over her hair. "It's okay," he murmured. "Everything's alright. You're safe now."
Now she was crying freely. They stood like this for several minutes, her tears staining the front of his coat as he comforted her. Eventually, she stopped crying and pulled back to wipe her eyes. Newt gently brushed the tears off her cheeks.
"What are you doing in New York?" Tina asked.
"Visiting you, of course," he replied with a smile. "I was about to go up to your apartment when I heard a scream. I reached the entrance to that alley and saw three men holding onto a woman. I called them and two of them came towards me. That's when I realized it was you. I hit one man in the nose and stunned all three of them.
"You passed out so I brought you into my case and cast a healing charm, though I didn't know what was wrong. Then I went back up, Obliviated the men, and fixed the one guy's nose. They won't remember any of what happened."
Tina smiled, remembering how mad she had been when he hadn't Obliviated Jacob. Then she frowned slightly. "We're not still in the alley, are we?"
Newt shook his head. "No, we're in your apartment now. Queenie's not here though. She left a note saying she'd gone out."
Probably to see Jacob, Tina thought.
They fell silent. Tina stared at Newt's shoes, distinctly aware of him studying her. Presently, he spoke.
"Oh, Tina. I'm so happy to see you," he murmured. "I really missed you."
Looking up at him, all the emotions she had been suppressing ever since they had said goodbye at the dock broke free and she flung her arms around Newt's neck, pressing her lips to his. Suddenly, embarrassed, she tried to pull away but his strong arms held her closer. She melted into the kiss and realized that here, in his arms, she was happy. She wished she could never leave. The feeling was wonderful and she wished it would never end.
A/N: This is an idea I've had for ages. I wasn't going to write it but I had eight pages left in my notebook. I used exactly eight of those pages. The last word was at the end of the last line of the last page. It was so satisfying.
Here's the plan for future stories. For now, I'm just going to work on When We Were Young. Once I've seen the movie, I'll begin coming up with new ideas. If I can come up with a good plot, I'll start a new book. I'll also come up with new ideas for short stories which I'll continue to post in this book.
I can't wait to see the new movie. I'll probably be seeing it on Sunday! I'm so excited!!
Anyway, if you enjoyed this story please vote and comment. Have a good day!
Bye!
