The dinner table was an awkward spot for me at the moment. Like I had expected, my mom had invited Amanda over for dinner. Oh joy.
"So, how was your day at school Lena?" my mom asked me. I took a big bite of the lasanga that she made with her homemade sauce.
"It was okay," I said. I needed to be as vague as possible.
"Just okay?" Amanda chimed in with her eyebrows raised.
"Mmmhhmmm," I nodded after chasing down my food with some water.
"So you mean to tell me that there was nothing out of the ordniary, and spectaculary that happened today?" Amanda persisted.
"I'm positive," I said. "How was your day Dad?" I quickly asked changing the subject. I knew that my dad would go on a rant complaining about his co-workers and his job. My dad hated office jobs but found himself with a master's degree in buisness. That eventually lead to an office job working for a large corporation. My dad felt confined stuck in his gray cubical and every time he had an opportunity he would gladly complain.
I listened to him complain and whine for a little while and watched as my mom and Amanda gave each other shrugs and little head shakes. They knew I had won this round and that they wouldn't get a word about Jesse out of me.
After dinner Kenji and Ben slipped from their seats and escaped the dining room to avoid the post-kitchen clean up jobs. My dad left too so that he could get comfortable. The only ones left were Amanda and my mom. Crap. I was as of now trapped.
"Okay Lena, we are gonna come right out with this," my sister said with her hands on my shoulder.
"What's going on with you and Jesse?" my mom asked with curiosity on her face.
"Yeah little sis, I didn't know you were into the bad boy type." Amanda smiled.
"It's nothing. I swear." I tried to convince them. But of course they didnt believe me because I could feel my face getting hotter and hotter by the second making my cheeks look like a fire hydrant.
"You're blushing sweetie!" my mom gushed.
"Stop mom," I whined. I was dying for a way to get out of this cramped situation.
"Are you two dating?!" Amanda squealed.
"Something like that," I muttered under my breath. My mom and sister looked at me with widened eyes and mouths.
"For how long!?" my mom asked.
"He asked me today mom. I doubt that it'll last long so chill. It's not a big deal." I tried to shrug it off. I didn't want them to know that this dating deal was only to soften Jesse's hardcore image. It would only upset them and make them pester me with even more questions. And before anymore words could escape their anxious lips I scurried up the stairs and into the comfort of my bedroom.
My phone lit up before I went to sleep that night. It was a message from Jesse. Good night Adams. I'll pick up at 7. <3 My heart skipped a beat reading the message over and over again. I guess this is what it felt to be a Jesse's girl.
