My hearing can be effected when people get serious and talk really loud, because my hearing is down and I sometimes can't separate all the sounds and I need the help of my FM microphone. The subjects I sometimes find hard to concentrate in are maths, english, arts and most other subjects that are loud.
Sometimes I have to turn up my hearing aids so I can hear the teacher speaking to the class. Sometimes the p.a has to tell the class to be quiet so people can hear the teacher talking. Sometimes our teacher helps by saying pork then crackle, pop then by the time she says pop we have to be quiet and stop talking which I love because it helps me be able to learn in peace. In the first term our teacher Miss Case counted 1 then 2 then 3 by the time Miss Case got to 3 we all had to be quiet not everyone listened but most did. I sometimes wish that the loud people could live a day in my life having to press buttons on my hearing aids up and down to hear, when people yell and scream.
Other obstacles I face sometimes are when I get called names, just because some people think I'm different. These words can be very hurtful like retard, idiot and sometimes they point out my hearing aids, calling me deaffy. This is not nice and being bullied is not nice and hurts my feelings.
Not many people know that I have had many surgeries on my ears so I can hear. I actually have a prosthetic ear drum. I had to live many years with not being able to get my ears wet, so I had to have ear plugs and a swimming cap just to have a shower. When I went for a swim I had to have special ear plugs, a head wrap as well as a swimming cap. If I ever got water in my ears I could get very sick and end up back in hospital. When I had to go to hospital I had to get tumours sucked out of my ears with a very long sucker tube, I sometimes had to get mum or dad to hold me down as it really hurt getting this done. I still have to go to the hospital every 6 months to have my ears checked to make sure the tumours aren't coming back. My doctor is very good at what he does, and he is very kind.
People really need to think about their actions and think about other people's obstacles.
