august saw the stars in the night sky, looking down on her with a smile. she rubbed her feet against the soft blanket below her and closed her eyes to reminisce. when her eyes opened once again, she drifted slowly into a state of awareness and sat up from her lying position. looking around, she found a deserted police station. it was secluded except for a tall figure through a window of the next room, frantically searching through cabinets and drawers.
august picked herself up and slowly walked toward the figure. she found herself trembling, her body shaking like an earthquake had passed. quickly but quietly, she opened the door into the office and whispered faintly, "w-who are you?"
the now in plain sight, blonde haired woman, turned around and leaped out of fear. "oh, gosh, august. you scared me." whispered a familiar face. "eleanor." august hugged her tightly and pulled away saying "what happened? i must've had a dream or something, i saw a man holding a knife to your throat, i-"
"it wasn't a dream, august," eleanor interrupted. "the man got shocked by your spontaneous appearance and quickly knocked us both out with some sort of chemical. he took my gun, and i'm trying to find some sort of weapon. i'm tempted to take you home, but i'm not sure where the man is, and if he follows you home i don't know what i'd do with myself."
"catch your breath, eleanor. i'm fine, i mean, i have seen like every episode of Castle and Psych so i think i know how to handle these things." she bragged. "oh, who am i kidding, i'm actually terrified, but-" "hey, hey, you're fine, kid. i'm gonna take care of you."
eleanor's soft smile comforted august in a way no one could in this moment. "thanks, eleanor." I pause. "well, as much as this sappy moment warms my heart, what the crap are we gonna do?!"
eleanor paced the room, picking up a pen along the way and hitting it against her chin. "well, of course i know what i would do, but since i have you here-" eleanor paused in realization. "wait, why are you even here?!"
"well, yeah, umm, i was gonna come here and discuss leia and penny's case, but ya know, kinda got occupied with the, uh, murderer guy and everything." august said sarcastically.
"i thought your mom would ban you from seeing me for like, ever, after seeing her the other day. man, she blew her top. she always like that?"
"yeah. why do you think i came to the San Diego Police Station at 9 o'clock at night? cause it's my favorite saturday night hobby?" "you got a point. well, i'm guessing you're past your curfew." august closed her eyes and nodded her head.
"little bit." "okay, well it's uh," eleanor checked her watch. "it's close to 1, so we have like 4 or 5 hours before people start coming in to work. we need to figure out who this guy is so it can maybe lead to where his location might be. did you get a good look at his face by any chance? he took his mask off at some point since it's on the floor."
"no, not really. wait-" august waved her hand at eleanor to make sure she didn't speak. she had a revaluation. all memories- of leia's disappearance, penny's disappearance, that night with eleanor- they all came flooding back.
she saw everything, but the thing that stood out to her the most was the guy from the gas station. his face was painting a clear picture in august's head.
"eleanor, eleanor, the guy at the gas station that night." "what about them? one of the robbers was him?" "no, he was outside of the gas station. he was about 30 feet away in a-ah, lemme think, a black Ford Ranger i think, and he was just sitting in his car, waiting-watching."
"august, august, that's great, okay, keep going," "well, i remember what he looks like clearly because he was there on the day leia disappeared. he was a major suspect for a while, but somehow someone anonymously cleared his name. they sent in videotape footage for his alibi." she hesitated. "but i saw him- with leia." "i think i know who you're talking about- let me check my records. keep talking." "i can't remember his full name, but i remember people calling him J, so i guess they didn't know his full name, only the first letter. he had long brown hair," "and brown eyes, caucasian, last seen at-" august held her breath. "well, where was he seen?!"
eleanor breathes heavily and closed her eyes. "leia's crime scene."
