"mom, mom, it's okay! i'm fine, i promise. mom- mo"
august couldn't get through a sentence without her mother saying "i swear, i'm gonna kill that cop." or "are you okay? are you sure? positive?"
"listen, stay where you are, don't move, i'm coming to get you."
"no, no, no no no mom. this could get ugly. i don't want you getting into this."
"what? sweetie why would i leave my 15-year-old daughter at a robbery in San Diego, CA? tell me that? you know i have to come get you, you're just in shock, you've never seen this sort of thing, and i know you don't want to."
august rolled her eyes and said "oh my gosh" under her breath.
i'm literally going to be a police detective when i grow up, mom. how did you not hear the gunshots from Chicago P.D. coming from my bedroom at 2 AM.
"i'll be here, mom."
she had already hung up the phone.
the only time august had ever heard her mother so passionate and loving to her was when leia went missing. it quickly went away. after the first few weeks of her disappearance, everything went back to the same old dull family who didn't barely speak to each other on a daily basis.
it sounds crazy, but, when my mom acts like an actual caring mom, it only makes me more depressed.
because i'm just anticipating the worst. she won't be like that tomorrow.
"sweetie, oh, baby, are you alright?" cherrie wills asked as she embraced her daughter tight as she could.
"yes, mother. i'm okay."
by then the backup team of cops had come and eleanor interviewed the man working the register.
when she was finished, well, she didn't know what was coming.
"hi, ma'am," cherrie muttered sarcastically, taking a long, hard, look at the woman in front of her.
"may i help you?"
"yes, you, eleanor," she said, squinting to read her name tag as she crossed her arms firmly. "you are a monster. how dare you bring my child to a crime scene!!! i should take this up with your boss myself and get you fired."
the words sunk in.
i am a monster. what have i done?
i was just trying to help.
what else could i have done?
"listen, your sweet girl over there was left alone at the scene of a crime tonight, and she didn't have anyone to pick her up. as a cop, it's my responsibility to work for the greater good. if i left her there, she would've froze to death."
"don't talk to me about the greater good!!! you're a cop, you have no feelings towards people."
august heard every word of the conversation and she couldn't believe what her ears were telling her brain.
why is she doing this? my mom isn't this straightforward. ever.
"hey, uh, mom? i really think-"
"not now honey, go wait in the car."
"with all due respect, ma'am, you left your child at the school."
"have you ever been a parent? you can't take that up with me until you have children of your own."
"mom! stop it! i told her i wanted to drive around so we could discuss leia's case. she worked on it. don't blame this on her."
cherrie wills froze.
"well, then, she was behind the wheel, wasn't she? can't she make decisions for herself?"
"ma'am, if i had known-"
"save it for the lawyer."
cherrie wrapped her arm around august's shoulder and pushed her towards the white sudan. august looked back with a drained look on her face.
she just wanted to stay with her.
why do i have to be her daughter?
