chapter one - the world is dark

September 7th, 2018. (Friday)

Ponyboy sighs softly, walking to school. He looks around, seeing everything but it all looks so dull, so dark.

The 16-year-old still hadn't found his soulmate so the world was still in shades of grey and black. It was sad, depressing almost to know that there was color in the world that you couldn't see.

All the time, he's asked Soda what color was since he already had his soulmate. His older brother's soulmate was a sweet boy.

Ponyboy continues walking and looking around, trying to imagine what the world would look like in color. He bets it looks wonderful, just like his soulmate would be.

"Stupid soulmate bullshit," the 16-year-old mutters under his breath.

He was sick and tired of waiting for someone to arrive that might never arrive. His soulmate could be dead and gone and he would never know because the world would always he dark.

"I hate this," Ponyboy murmurs to himself, his eyes filling slowly with tears of frustration. "I wanna see colors like everyone else..."

He arrives at school and wipes his eyes softly, tilting his chin to the ground and walking absentmindedly to his locker. The boy could feel eyes on him but he was so used to it that he couldn't care less.

"Hey, Ponyboy," one of his friends call before jogging over to him.

Ponyboy looks up at his friend who was smiling happily. He couldn't help but smile back, his friend's smile being contagious.

"Did you hear the news," Two-Bit asks.

"What news," Ponyboy replies. "I haven't heard anything."

"We have a foreign exchange student," Two-Bit exclaims. "Isn't that great? That means one more person you can see about being your soulmate."

Two-Bit already has his soulmate and all of his other friends, brothers even, had theirs. Ponyboy was the only one left and it was a little frustrating.

"I'm almost 100% sure that the new student will not be my soulmate," Ponyboy says. "It's probably someone else's from here or maybe they found a soulmate back in their country. It's unlikely that they'll be mine."

"Well, stop being a pessimist and think positively," Two-Bit says. "Think that this kid is going to be your soulmate. Have a little hope in the situation. I could be right."

Ponyboy groans lightly and tilts his head, causing the older male to laugh. The boy was always reminding him to think bright.

"What if they are my soulmate," Ponyboy asks. "They're just a foreign exchange student destined to be here for the school year before going back home to their country. If they were my soulmate, they would leave me here because they can't stay."

Two-Bit sighs, bringing the slightly taller bot into a hug. Ponyboy hugs back lightly and rests his head against the older boy's shoulder.

"Just have a little faith, yeah," Two-Bit says. "That's all you can do here... That's all. You got this. You'll find them. Just have some faith."

"I'll try, Two-Bit," Ponyboy murmurs, pulling away from their hug. "Now, get to class before the bell rings. I got to get my stuff in my locker and I'll meet you in Biology."

"You got it, buddy," Two-Bit says, ruffling the boy's hair and walking off to class.

Ponyboy sighs and opens his locker, putting the stuff he didn't need in there before taking a notebook and a pencil before closing it. He doesn't bother to fix his hair and heads off to Biology.

Sodapop: 18 (drop out; works)

Steve: 19 (graduated;works)

Dallas: 19 (senior; he didn't care about school so now he's doing junior work as well as senior work to catch up and graduate)

Two-Bit: 19 (senior; same reason as Dallas)

Darrel: 22 (graduated; works)

Paul: 23 (graduated;works)

I bumped up the ages a bit so the plot could make sense. Thanks for reading!!
