Our Beginning

It was a perfect evening in Seoul as everyone presumed. The sun was setting and the sky was clear. Birds danced around happily in the air as a light breeze flowed over the city.

It was absolutely breathtaking to watch from the highway as the tides rolled in and out along the shoreline, but even I of all people know that those sights don't last forever.

They'll eventually fade away one by one until you can't face them anymore and might I say, it's the story of my life.

"We're almost there, Mrs. Jung," I nodded towards the driver, a shaky sigh leaving my lips. It's been a while since I've seen my brother and I could only imagine the state he is in. Whether it is terror, content, or sadness, I wouldn't know. Growing up he was always unpredictable.

"We have arrived," He spoke in a humble voice all while pulling the car to a stop.

"Thank you," I spoke softly before hopping out with my bags.

So this is Seoul? I expected it to be more busy than usual, but you cannot expect much when you're living in the suburbs.

"Ara?" My eyes glazed my surroundings before landing on my older brother who stood tall in front of me.

"Hoseok?" I could hear the surprise in my own voice as I spoke his name softly. It hasn't rolled off my tongue in so long, but I'm glad that the familiarity of his face was now there again. It brought a smile to my own just knowing it.

"I missed you so much," he wrapped his long arms around me in a hug.

"I missed you too," He looked at me with sad eyes and from that moment, I could tell what he was thinking.

"Mom and dad loved you so much. You must know that," I looked him right in his dark, brown orbs, hoping he'd believe me when I said that.

He left Gwangju a long time ago and it wasn't until after our parents' disappearance, that he revealed his whereabouts. I couldn't possibly tell you what made him choose to go off on his own because he refused to tell anyone.

"I know," I could hear the uncertainty in his voice. He was never very open to mom and dad, just me. Probably because I had no one to talk too.

Again, I don't know. Hoseok and I are own, so we need to be there for each other once again.

"Well, come on now, I'll show you the apartment," He grabbed one of my bags and led me up the stairs and to his tiny and warm apartment in the complex.

***

"This is your room," I looked around at the plain white walls and decor that matched it perfectly. For such a small apartment, you'd figure it wouldn't look as modernized as it what it did. I guess you can't underestimate the one and only, Jung Hoseok.

I plopped myself onto the bed and stretched out exaggeratedly, letting out an obnoxious yawn as I basked in the new room.

"You like it?" Hoseok asked with a tiny chuckle.

"I love it," I smiled to myself, forgetting all of the world's problems for just that moment. It felt nice to unwind for even a little bit, back at home it wasn't this way at all.

"Hoseok, tell me why did you leave us?" I opened my eyes to find him sitting at the foot of the bed, looking at me with the most puzzled expression, almost as if he didn't expect me to ask that.

"Ara," he paused for a subtle moment, attempting to find the right answer for my concern. Just when I had thought I finally had an answer, he left me out once again.

"I'm afraid I don't really have an answer to that," he gave me an apologetic look before standing up and making his way to the door.

Why couldn't he just tell me? I need the answers I've been waiting for for so long! He can't shut me out now! Not when our parents have just disappeared!

"Why won't you tell me?!" I yelled to him, tears threatening to well in my eyes. He's been gone for so many years. I've had to live without knowing what happened to my brother or why he left. That's a certain burden I don't want to be living with, especially when I'm so close to the truth.

He turned around and looked at me with shock, but even when I raised my voice at him, he started to grin.

"You'll know soon enough, Ara, I promise," he left without a word. Not an answer, nor a hint, but his words weren't as what he had said.

You'll know soon enough, Ara.

I bet I would. He never lies.

But I don't think that the answers I'm looking for are as simple as '1,2,3', but as unexpected and dangerous as the darkness after the sun falls over the horizon.
