AS I made my way down the city street, I feel overwhelmed by people walking and talking in scores of different languages. I walked up to the building that I was supposed to meet Christian at. Different thoughts running through my mind as I opened the doors to the cafe. To see Christian sitting in the first booth near the front door, our eyes met causing him to get up from his seat smiling.
"Wow, it's been so long," Christian reached for a hug but I just pulled away, causing him to nod his head. "You look great, Nailah. Thank you for sitting down with me today, it means a lot."
I shrugged my shoulders. "You said you wanted to talk to me, so talk." I sat down in the seat across from him.
"I wanted to apologize for disappointing you. I know I let you down. I couldn't follow through on my end, and for that, I am so very sorry. I hate to let anyone down, and most of all, you, the love of my life. It broke my heart to see that you gave up on me. But I wanted you to know that I'm really sorry. I will forever love you."
"The difference between me and you is, I never gave up on you, the way you gave up on me. I was always here." I said. "I will always have love for you because you're my child's father, that's it. I was the one who took your bullshit, I was the one who actually cared about you. But what did I get in return? Absolutely nothing. I was the one who stuck around when everyone told me to leave. I was the one who loved you when you gave me every reason not to. Lastly, I was the one who was there for you when no one else was. You want things to go back to how they were but what I remember is many sleepless nights and how you weren't there for me."
Christian was lost for words, all he could do was shake his head. "I want to talk to you, but I don't know what to say. No matter how many times I say I'm sorry, you don't believe me. You think that nothing good can come from us, but I don't see it that way. You'll never get how much I miss you and I'll never get how much I hurt you. I'm beyond sorry." Christian stated, causing me to look down at my hands as I slowly wiped the tears that escaped from my eyes.
"Please don't cry," Christian stared at me, as I looked up at him. You know you truly love somebody when they hurt you so badly, but all you can think about is the times when they made you smile. "I wish I can turn back time so I could fix every mistake and be with you again."
"Sometimes you have to accept the fact that certain things will never go back to how they use to be," I said, wiping the remaining tears away. "We have a child together and I'm not going to be the one keeping you away from her, she deserves to know who you are. Even though we didn't work out as a couple, Ella deserves to get to know you. I would never take that from you."
"I know we'll never get back together, but I hope we can still be friends. Because you were my best friend before we started dating and I miss the friendship we had. I'm sorry for everything and I thank you for the best years of my life. I'm happy that you're letting me see, Ella."
I looked down at my hands before looking back up at him. "You will always have a special place in my heart. You weren't the one for me but you were my first. I will not regret the time we spent together. Ella will be so happy getting to know you and actually see the good in you that I saw."
Christain smiled, causing me to look down and smile. "I appreciate that because you don't have to do any of this for me or even say any of those things but you chose too and I really do appreciate that. I missed talking with you Nailah. Man, do you remember all the late night talks we had about absolutely nothing? It just made my night just to hear your voice."
I shook my head. "Those were the days, my momma would always get mad at me because she could never use the house phone."
Christian chuckled. "So, how are we going to do this?"
"Let's just start with you meeting her first and then we can talk about all the other important things," I answered as he shook his head. "Maybe we can all go out to lunch tomorrow?"
"That's fine with me," Christian said. "I'll enjoy any time I get with her."
"Alright then, I'll see you tomorrow around two o'clock?" I said, before grabbing my things and lifting up from the seat. "It was great seeing you and I wish you nothing but the best."
"Ight, I'll see you then," Christain lifted up from his seat. "Thank you for coming to meet with me, it was great seeing you again as well." Christian gave me a hug before watching me walk out of the cafe.

I walked into my house, to see Ella and Monica sitting on the couch watching television. "Mommy!" Ella smiled, running over towards me giving me a tight hug. "Guess what Auntie Monica and I did today?"
"What?" I asked, sitting my jacket on the hanger in the closet and taking off my shoes at the front door.
"We made these," Ella showed me the bracelets that she had on her wrists, before handing me one. "I made this one for you, Auntie told me what your favorite color was."
"Aw, thank you, baby," I attacked her with kisses causing her to giggle. "You just made my day, I love it."
"I'm glad," Monica said. "Cause' we worked way too hard on those things, she wanted to make like twenty of those for you but I was like let's just keep it down to two."
Ella smiled. "Thank you for helping me TT."
"No problem, baby," Monica gave her a kiss on the forehead. "How about you go to the back and play with your Barbie dream house and give me and your mommy some time to talk."
"Okay," Ella said, causing me to smile. My daughter changed my world for the better, she's my life. She's the greatest gift that I've ever gotten. Ella ran to the back room. "So, tell me how everything went." Monica smiled, walking back over towards the couch and patting the seat beside her. "Spill the beans."
"It's just so different now between us," I sat down beside her. "He apologized for everything that happened between us and wants to be friends. But, it's like at the end of the day I'll always remember the hurt that he has caused me but that doesn't change the fact that I will forever have love for him."
I took a deep breathe. "He is the father of my child and I will never make him feel like he couldn't be a part of her life when he certainly can. We just took the time to sit down as adults and talk about our problems and managed to have an agreement when it came to Ella and that's all that it will be. We just have a child together."
"Wow, look at you," Monica smiled. "You've come along way, everything you've gotten through. All the times you have pushed on when you felt you couldn't. I'm so proud of you and I will always tell you that. I think this would be great for Ella to be able to get to know both of her parents, you know? We didn't have the same opportunity as she does right now, so I think you guys are making a great decision allowing this to happen."
I smiled, shaking my head. "Thank you for being my true friend, it's a blessing to have you in my life."
