NAILAH arrived at the hospital just in time; she was lucky to even have a room available because it was so packed this evening. Room 345. All ready for Nailah to use. Laying in the hospital bed, Nailah screamed for dear life, you could tell she was really in pain by looking at her face. Nailah just wanted to get everything over with already. "Just take a breather, you got this." Nailah best friend Monica squeezed her hands tightly. The contractions were wearing Nailah down.

A few minutes later a gush of liquid came out of Nailah's body causing her best friend to stare at her. Nailah and her best friend were the only ones in the room because her family couldn't make it and the baby's father wasn't apart of her life anymore.

-

"It's time," The doctor said. "I'm going to need for you to push."

"I can't do this!" Nailah cried out. "I really can't do this."

"You got this," Monica whispered in her ear. "Just breath."

Nailah listened, she pushed and pushed long and hard before there was any progress. The head finally showed. The pain was unbearable for Nailah, she thought she was going to die. "This doesn't look good," The doctor exclaimed. He widened his eyes. "It looks like something isn't right with her. It's the umbilical cord, it's wrapped around her neck."

It felt like Nailah's heart had dropped to her stomach, She couldn't do anything but freak out. "What does that mean? Is she going to be okay? Please tell me she's going to be okay."

"If we don't get the baby out right now," The doctor said. "She's not going to make it."

When Nailah heard that, it felt like her whole body went numb. She couldn't even imagine losing her daughter after all of this time that she's been hoping and praying for her to come. Nailah closed her eyes and started praying: "Dear God, I'm trusting you. I know you heard my prayer. Your time, not mine."

-

"Do you need anything?" Monica asked her as she closed her eyes. Monica grabbed the damp rag and patted it against her forehead. "You're strong, you got this."

"Keep pushing, you're almost there," The doctor reminded her.

Nailah screamed, still heaving and pushing steadily. Nailah's cousin came into the room, walking over towards her bed. "Amandla?" Nailah said, relieved. Even though she hasn't seen her favorite cousin in months since she moved away, she was excited.

"Just keep breathing," Amandla kissed her forehead, rubbing her hand.

"They said she has a-"

Both Monica and Amandla shushed her. "Just keep pushing. Don't quit now or all of this was for nothing." Monica said.

Nailah went on like this for a while. Breathing, chanting and pushing. It was a repeated cycle. Nailah was beginning to pass out. Who knew how long she had left to continue on like this.

"Please help me," Nailah whispered to herself. "I held you warm in there long enough. It's time for you to come out and see the world, baby girl."

-

Half of the baby excited Nailah's body and the doctor was able to pull out the rest of the body. Immediately after the doctor cut the cord from around her neck, her daughter was put on her chest. She couldn't stop smiling. "She's beautiful," Nailah started shedding a few tears as she smiled.

"Aw, look at my niece," Monica smiled, looking deep into the baby's eyes. And with that, the baby went silent. No more crying, just silent.

"I love you, Ella," Nailah whispered. After a few minutes, the nurse took Ella to get her cleaned up and run a few tests. "You did so well," Amandla smiled, giving her a hug. Even though Nailah felt alone during this pregnancy having moments where she thought she wasn't going to do good with parenting after seeing her child for the first time all her bad thoughts escaped from her mind.

-

"She has your nose," Monica said, causing Nailah to smile down at Ella, giving her a kiss on the forehead.

"I'm still in shock, I can't believe that she's finally here," Nailah smiled.

"Me either, it felt like you were pregnant forever," Amandla couldn't stop staring at her. "She's so beautiful, you did that."

"I will always be there for you. To hold you, inspire you, guide you, protect you, and love you with all my heart. Not just when you need it most, but every day of your life. From your last breath till my very last." Nailah whispered to her daughter, kissing her on the forehead. Having her daughter was the best thing that ever happened to her. She knew having her daughter young would teach her so much.
