I hadn't made any runs since Jaivon has been gone, which has been almost two weeks now. Kane comes in and out when he wants, and we haven't talked much since that night he opened up. I honestly don't know what I expected, it's not like he and I are friends. Just mutual people in fucked up situations because of a fucked-up past. Essence hasn't said much of anything to me either, but that's already expected. At this point she might as well move to the other wing of the house so we don't even see each other. Every morning I pass by her open bedroom door, wanting to go in and talk and laugh like we used to. I did this to myself when I accused her of doing what a good friend would never do. At the same time however, she can't really blame me. Look at the type of world we live in. Can't put nothing past no one, at least not in this house.

"What you reading?"

I looked up from my book and saw Kane smiling down at me, leaning on the door frame. His hair had grown a little since he's been here, but I honestly like the rough look on him. His beard was neat, kind of like the main character of that show that comes on Starz every Sunday. I imagine he gets his light eyes from his mother, because Jaivon damn sure doesn't have them. He sported a crisp black v-neck t shirt, that showed tiny hints of a chest tattoo. His jeans hugged his muscular thighs like vice grips and I saw every bulge when he shifted from one foot to the next. Kane was all man coated in chocolate. And all my confused ass wanted to do was see how he tasted.

"Just a book I've been reading".

He looked at me as if he was impressed. I rolled my eyes. "What? I don't look like the type to read?", I asked.

"I don't judge a book by its cover".

"Really? Could have fooled me".

"How many times do I have to apologize for the things I said?"

I shrugged and opened my book back up. I didn't want to dwell on the past anymore.

"I remember the day I did say those things; it was something you said that has been stuck in my head".

"Yeah? What's that?"

"My father raped you?"

My breath hitched into my throat and stayed there until I could literally feel my heart beating in my ears. I cleared my throat and ran my fingers through my now short cut hair. Having a fro up under those wigs damn near was giving me a heat stroke, so I went to the nearest shop and took some scissors to it and permed it. Kind of miss my curls but this will have to do.

"I don't want to talk about it".

"Why not?"

"I don't know what you want me to say".

"How about why you're still here if he did some evil shit like that to you?"

"Same reason you'll still obey his every command while knowing this information".

He walked over and sat next to me on my bed. He wrapped his arm around me and rubbed my shoulder; the touch was comforting.

"Why haven't you said anything?", he asked.

"To who, the police? Then what? I'll be back out on the streets".

"You have nobody that can take you in?"

"No! Why do you think I'm here? I had the money to get away before I met Jaivon but your aunt stole it from me".

"Cha? She wouldn't-"

"You just think she's some saint, huh? She stole my money, set me up with your father, drugged me on my birthday, and raped me like I wasn't worth dog shit! They got a kick out of robbing me of my innocence. Every time I take a step forward they knock me five steps back".
