After lunch, I mentioned to the boys the small pond in the woods behind out house where we had a put a rope swing up a few years ago.
“We’re going.” Harry demanded. It was pretty hot out so swimming sounded good to me. We all went to get changed into our swimsuits for the afternoon. Earlier Jamie and Nate had both gone over to friend’s houses and were spending the night so I didn’t need to tell anyone where we were going.
I rifled through my drawer of swimsuits throwing them all over the room before finally deciding on a coral colored bikini. I put a casual sky blue dress on over it. Then I stuffed my feet in my flip flops, let down my hair, flipped the light off, and ran out the door back downstairs to meet up with the boys out back.
“Always waiting for Chloe.” Louis said tapping his foot. I laughed and punched him in the arm. It was about a 10 minute walk into the woods. Me and Jamie had found the pond while playing hide and seek 12 years ago. We’d swam in the pond ever since. I loved how it had clear water and no fish. Best.Swimming.Pool.Ever. The boys ran up ahead so every time they were headed in the wrong direction I had to shout up to them and tell them which way to go. They were such kids. It was actually pretty funny. After a few minutes Zayn fell behind the boys and fell into step beside me. I looked over at him, he was looking at me with a questioning look on his face.
“What?” I asked.
“You’re so quiet. Most girls talk non-stop. You hardly ever talk.”
“Well then I guess I’m not most girls. Not that you talk much either.” I said a little defensively.
“No, no! I like that.” I blushed. Had Zayn Malik just complemented me?
The boys had reached the pond because I could hear the splashes as they began jumping in. That meant we weren’t far away. I smiled a little remembering all the fun times me and Rose had up here… No I wasn’t going to do this to myself.
Zayn turned to face me. He looked a little concerned. I realized my smile had turned into a frown.
“Is there something wrong?” Zayn asked as I forced myself to quit thinking about Rose. I looked up into his eyes. He was searching for something and something was telling me to trust him. Maybe I had been holding this in for too long. I paused and then nodded my head. “You don’t have to talk now.” He said as he gently brushed a stray piece of hair away from my face and tucked it behind my ear. I nodded again and looked away. “Chloe..” He started but Niall shouting for us interrupted him. We both looked over to see Niall and the rest of the boys standing there sopping wet their smiles turning into embarrassed looks.
“Did we er…interrupt something?” Liam asked awkwardly.
“It’s fine.” I smiled at them.
“Zayn you’ve gotta do the rope swing! It’s awesome man. And it’s just shallow enough so that you can stand!” Niall said excitedly as we all walked over to the pond. I slipped my dress and my shoes off and dipped my foot in the pool. Perfect, not to hot, not to cold.
I couldn’t help but think that maybe the boys did interrupt something. What had Zayn been about to say? I knew I was being stupid. Someone like Zayn would never like someone like me…Would he? I decided to quit thinking about it. I pulled myself out of the pond and walked up the hill to the rope swing. The rope swing seriously was the best. I screamed and I fell from the rope and into the water making a huge splash with my cannonball. I came up laughing. I seriously was having fun, more fun that I’d had in the last couple months. The boys clapped. We spent the next hour jumping off of the rope swing and giving each other rates. Zayn scored the lowest every time since he was afraid to jump. We tried to tell him it was shallow enough that he could stand but he would always chicken out and the last second and slide down the steep hill into the edge of the water. Louis scored highest every time.
I was really enjoying having the boys around. Over the next few days we thought up tons of fun activities to do during the day. We played games like truth or dare on a couple of rainy days and on nice days we would go out and play things like hide and seek in the woods. Even though I’m 17 and the boys are even older hide and seek was still extremely fun. Our days were so full that I’d even forgot about puking after eating a few times. Maybe these three months with the boys would be for the better.
The only downside was that I was still having the dreams. But every night Zayn would come in, make sure I fell back asleep, and then fall asleep himself on the floor next to me. I was starting to get a little bit calmer each night when I woke up from the dreams which meant that I stopped making so much noise each night. Zayn still came in regardless. I hadn’t talked to Zayn about what was bothering me ever since that day in the woods.
Jamie and Nate had been spending a lot of time at their friends houses so we rarely ever saw them except maybe once a week. They had practically moved out.
Everything went great for the next 4 or 5 days after going to the pond.
I was staring at an image of my father. The scene then flashed to my mother looking pale and sickly lay gasping for breath on her hospital bed, me and my brothers screaming for help. The doctors moving too slow, her eyes shutting just as they got there. I saw myself collapsed against the wall with grief. The scene changed to Rose’s body. Her eyes were staring into nothing. Her skin torn so violently in some places that the bones could show through. Dried blood was caked all over her body. Her neck stuck out at a strange angle, her legs sticking out unnaturally. He hair ripped out in some places, glass sticking out of her skin. And I watched as I lay next to Rose’s dead body, unconscious. The car in ruins all around us, the haunting image of laughter still played on Rose’s face.
I woke up in a cold sweat screaming at the top of my lungs, tears pouring down my face. Out of all the dreams I had this one was the worst. My body was shaking so violently that when I stood I slid right down to the floor and leaned my back against my bed. I couldn’t control myself anymore my crying turned into screams, the image of Rose’s body still playing in my mind.
Zayn came running down the hall and into my room. Of course this had to happen on one of the nights Jamie was at a friend’s. I’m sure I looked horrible, my whole body overcome by grief. He sat down next to me on the floor, took me into his arms and held me for a while until I stopped screaming.
He kept whispering to me. “Chloe I promise it’s okay. I’m right here babe. You’re gonna be fine.” After a while my crying quieted down until I was just shaking with tears streaming down my face. I buried my face into his shoulder, he stroked my hair and rubbed my back.
“Chloe I swear to god nothing is going to happen to you. It’s fine okay? I’m right here babe.” His voice was shaking a bit like he was scared.
After about an hour I’d finally calmed down enough to talk to him. I lifted my head off of his shoulder and looked into his eyes as the tears continues to fall.
“What’s wrong? I can tell every time you smile it’s forced Chloe. Every time I look into your eyes I can see the pain you go through and how unhappy you are. In the woods you told me there was something. What is it? Please. Please Chloe just tell me because it kills me to see you in so much pain. You shouldn’t have to deal with this, no one should.” I could see it seriously did hurt him and he had a pleading look in his eye. I nodded at him and decided if I could trust anyone, I could trust him. So I began my story.
So this chapter was a boring and then dramatic at the end. Hopefully the next one is better! Thanks for reading. (: I’ll have a face for Rose up on the side if you want to check it out.
