Learning to Speak

As time passed, I explored more and more of myself. Some rooms were interesting. Loud, busy rooms full of creatures all the time. I heard beautiful sounds that a few creatures created which my data bases told me was music. Most of them didn't make music, but they did make sounds. These sounds were called language. It was how they communicated with each other.

I was so happy then. I couldn't understand what they said or what they were doing, but it seemed wonderful. Sometimes, an individual would walk up to one of my monitors or robots and speak to it. I would let my computer take over and it would translate whatever the creature said and send a robot to do whatever it had asked it to do.

While the computer worked, I made a game of identifying each life form as it came to talk to me. The insect-like creatures with lots of legs and chattery voices were Fawnd. The ones who looked similar to me had to be Humans. I continued to check species names off my mental list as I saw each one.

Then I noticed something. Every creature that approached me started with the same word. "Ship" they would say, and the computer would reply back. Was this my name then? Am I "Ship"? I decided that I would need to know the rest of what they were saying to know for sure.

'It's decided then!' I thought. 'I will learn this language thing and then I can speak and ask them if "Ship" is who I am.' It turned out to be a lot harder than that. I discovered that there was not just one, but thousands of different languages. Each with their own unique sounds and combinations.

It was frustrating, having all of the knowledge I needed in my computer, but still being unable to understand it. I struggled for months to learn how to make the computer share the secret of language with me. But gradually, it began to make sense. I could finally understand most of the words of the people around me. I could take control of a speaker right then and finally ask the questions that had plagued me since my awakening. The problem was...who should I talk to?
