Toniam had regretted attending this event the moment she looked up to the indoor balcony above the ballroom and saw him. The girl with grey contacts already wanted to leave before she encountered the high ranking knight. She sighed quietly from her seat at the far side of the room. She didn't know why she had decided to show up in the first place. What had possessed her to don her silver gown and mask, curl her hair, and enter the palace? She figured she wouldn't ever really know.
She stared boredly out at the many different dancers and couples out on the floor, twirling and dancing gracefully. She was seemingly enamored by the way they spun, but was soon snapped out of her trance by the presence of another taking a seat at her table. She looked up and almost immediately stood to leave. She couldn't find the courage in herself to face him now. Not after knowing what he had done. She almost got away with her escape, but a hand firmly caught her by the arm.
She took a moment to calm her quickly beating heart and turned to face the man she'd been hoping to avoid tonight. Aeldun Drakon. The man who had left her just so he could take the position he had now. She hated how well the royal blue suit he wore fit him. How perfectly the indigo and gold mask he wore framed his features. How his hair was perfectly neat and gelled. The hardest part was looking him in his gorgeously blue eyes with her own silver ones. She could hardly stand looking at him. Because she care about him. She had been devastated when he left her. But she couldn't let him see that. She couldn't let him see how much he had hurt her. She couldn't let him know he had caused her to cry herself to sleep for weeks on end. That because of him she refused to leave her house unless she needed food. She would not allow him to know she was weak. So what would have been a sorrowful glance became a hateful glare. "What do you want?" Her tone was harsh and demanding. She almost felt bad to see the hurt in his eyes at the tone of her voice. Almost.
"I just...wanted to see you...I know you probably hate me but...could I at least dance with you one more time before I never get to see you again?" Well, at the very least he understood that he would likely never see her again after tonight. She sighed. He was so hopeful, she couldn't turn him down.
"One dance," she conceded. His eyes seemed to light up with a sad joy and his hand moved from her arm to her own hand, gripping it gently. He guided her to the floor and they joined the multitude of dancers on the floor. She wanted to say she hated this. But she couldn't She loved dancing. She loved being surrounded by other dancers. She loved dancing with him.
She loved him.
She wanted to slap herself. She couldn't just go back to him, could she? He had left her to take a simple job. She should hate him. But here, dancing in his arms, her focus solely on him, his strong figure, his pale hair and skin, and his deep, regretful, indigo eyes, it just all felt right. The song ended and he released her slowly.
"Farewell then...Toniam. Thank you...for one last dance." His sad tone broke her heart. He bowed and turned to leave but she didn't let him get far.
"Perhaps...it doesn't have to be the last." He turned to face her as she smiled up at him a bit. "I wouldn't mind a few more dances." She couldn't contain her smile as she watched his features light up in joy and hope.
So maybe he had hurt her. Maybe he had broken her heart.
But he regretted it. And for that, she was willing to give him another chance.
After all, blue and green often mix well.
