REGRET

"Mr. Greenfield, someone is here to see you," Elizabeth announced immediately after hearing her boss call out to her to enter the door.

"Who is it?" He asked while placing his hand over the receiver.

"It's your ex-wife, sir. She was refused entrance at the guard station downstairs. Apparently, they have tried for quite some time to encourage her to leave peacefully. But... she is behaving a bit irrationally, at the moment and those poor guys aren't exactly sure what they should do. She has been most insistent that it is an emergency and she must speak with you immediately." His secretary announced.

"Ok. Please request that one of them escort her up and right back down as soon as the conversation is finished." He requested as he waved her out of the office.

Asher finished his conversation and checked off the list of plans he had been working on for the past hour.

He and Sorrow would celebrate their one-year anniversary since they began dating. Reserving a restaurant and making it a special night was the most important task on his mind. Not even his ex would distract him from completing what was on his list.

Of course, it was well within Marie's character to visit his office on such a joyous day. After all, the woman had the perfect radar for causing and engaging in any number of foul and deceitful misbehaviors.

In Asher, Marie found stability. She admitted after they were divorced that she never wanted to marry a boring stick-in-the-mud like him. Had her parents not insisted that the Greenfields were already like family, she would have walked away before the marriage ever occurred.

He also learned after the divorce that her parents threatened to disown her if she made them look bad before her in-laws.

He spent entirely too much time dealing with her lies in the past. Now that he had an amazing woman in his life, he no longer had to wonder about everything that went wrong with his ex.

No matter what the excuse might have been, she and Asher might have still been friends if she had just told him that the marriage no longer fit into her plans. He was such an easygoing person that he would never have held her honesty against her. It was more likely that after discussing the situation with Asher, he would have figured out a way for them to quietly dissolve their union.

All of that stuff was water under the bridge, as far as he was concerned. It happened and there was nothing he or Marie could do to change things. Reminding himself of the bad times only served to highlight the importance of the day he was in the process of arranging for himself and his lady.

Asher figured it was best to get Marie out of his office and the building as soon as possible considering he had a few more surprises to put in place.

"Elizabeth, please send her in," He pressed the button on his phone as he called out to his receptionist.

The stress lines in Marie's face convinced him that it was likely that she hadn't slept a wink since their last meeting. Asher had every intention of being kind to her, but he was resolved to give her a sharp NO for whatever scheme she was determined to try to involve herself in.

Finally, Asher had moved on with his life and he was happy. He was no longer full of anger at Marie's betrayal. As far as he was concerned, her life was hers to live as she pleased, and she had to start figuring things out for herself.

Sorrow was scheduled to join him later for some couple's quality time, and he had no intention of placing her in an uncomfortable position.

"Hello, Marie. How can I help you?" He asked as his secretary led her into his office.
