THE MOUNTAIN

Asher finished examining the legal briefs on his desk. The workload seemed to have multiplied since he asked Sorrow to marry him. It seemed as if his boss was determined to load him down before his wedding and month-long honeymoon.

Even though the workload was heavy, he neither cared nor fretted over it. Asher was a seasoned prosecutor, and this wasn't the first time he had worked long hours or taken on an impossible caseload.

The knowledge of his impending wedding supplied all the joy and smiles he required to bring sunshine on his cloudy days. With everything moving in a pleasant direction, Asher's heart beamed on the surface and as deep inside.

Asher made a sincere attempt to focus his attention on work, but it became difficult to do.

As long as he could remember, Asher hadn't recalled anyone sweeping both of his parents off their feet the way Sorrow had.

She began to insist they spend every Sunday with his parents.

Asher and Sorrow would arrive Saturday evening for dinner and spend the night at his childhood home. She would sleep in a guest bedroom while he slept in his old room out of respect for his parents.

Of course, Mrs. Greenfield caught her naughty son sneaking into Sorrow's room from time to time. And he would always try to lie or play it off the fact that he was headed to his fiancée's room whenever he was caught before making it to her door.

"Mom, what are you doing up so late?" He asked, stretching his arms out while releasing a fake yawn.

"The same as always. Just like you." She accused, pointing her sharp fingernail and pressing it into her son's chest.

"I was about to check on Sorrow and make sure she's okay."

"I just bet you were." She poked him once more.

"Really? Why else would I be down here?"

"Why, indeed? I know you have already had your filthy little way before, but not tonight." His mother pointed the fragile age withered finger back in the direction from wince he came.

"Really? Mom. I am a grown man? For goodness sake, I'm nearly a senior myself." He stared in disbelief as he stood his ground.

"No matter how old or tall you get, you are still my little boy. You may have convinced that little girl to do dirty things with you at your house, but you better watch your step around here, young man." His mother insisted.

"Are you serious?"

"Yes, sir. I am. Besides, she had a busy week just like you did, and she wasn't feeling so hot when she went to bed. Now, GO." She pointed back in the direction of his bedroom with a look on her face emphasizing that she meant business.

Without wasting any more words, Asher turned his six-foot-four frame away from the five-foot-three mountain standing between him and his sweetheart.

HOPE

They enjoyed a leisurely day with Asher's parents.

Current affairs and legal matters were an endless source of discussion. Even Sorrow engaged in the conversation with intrigue and insight.

During the exchange, Mrs. Greenfield and his fiancée left the men for the solace of the sitting room to talk in peace. Asher attempted to remain focused on his father's conversation, but his mind drifted into the room with the women.

"Son. I can assure you that your mother won't gobble her up." Greenfield senior chuckled to himself.

Asher glanced over to where his father sat just in time to catch the all too knowing grin on his dad's face.
