I managed to get another hour's worth of sleep before my alarm blared and I had to begin getting ready to leave for the school day ahead. This morning it would just be me and Sam in the car as Lara-Jean had promised her dad she would practice her driving this first semester. She had snapped me a picture of Kitty's crash helmet last night which I didn't blame her for, Lara-Jean's driving was that bad.
Sam was a good distraction to have in the car all things considered and he prattled away about his first day back, keeping me preoccupied from thinking about what on earth had happened on Instagram last night.
Mercifully, there was no lacrosse practice tonight due to my grade's team having a match tomorrow, which was a Saturday, praise the Lord. This was what, my second day back, and I was already needing another month off? It wasn't even the workload that was bothering me (although that did add to the stress), it was more having to be around all of the shitty loud and judgemental people at school that did my head in.
Don't get me wrong, it is now I have to shamefully reveal that I had certainly done my time in the so-called "popular" group when I was younger. It had been me, Gen and Lara-Jean in 7th grade, off to parties almost every month and involved in almost every piece of gossip to go around the school. Thinking about that part of my life makes me chuckle a little, just picturing the time the three of us spent 3 hours prepping at Gen's house before a party, only for her to turn around and say that we couldn't wear the outfits we had planned because they "showed her up."
I guess that was the start of the downward spiral which had lead to Lara-Jean and I having a huge falling out with Gen in 8th grade, over god knows what. In hindsight, it turned out to be the biggest blessing in disguise.
Unlike Lara-Jean I was still relatively friendly with the "cool" group but politely declined the numerous party invites. Let's just say I much preferred a Netflix binge-watch over at Chris' house to random dudes in my year getting a bit too up close and personal.
I felt slightly nervous pulling into my parking spot in school today and was dreading bumping into Gen who probably had a word or two to say about the whole situation. No one else, however, seemed to be too phased by the goings-on of last night as I walked down the corridors to my locker. Except, of course, Lara-Jean and Chris. They wanted to know every detail as soon as I'd entered the classroom and shoved me down into my seat in front of them to hear the news.
I swivelled round in my chair to face their desks behind me, sighing reluctantly. Knowing them, this would be blown out of proportion so I would keep the talk of drama to a minimum.
After vigorous prompting from them both, I had no choice but to tell them my side of things.
"I think it all stemmed from her seeing me talking to him after practice. And then I guess she saw he'd been commenting on my posts and misread the situation."
Chris and Lara-Jean looked at me expectantly.
"Other than that, I'm as much in the dark as you are. It's not a big deal to be quite honest."
"I'm just glad Gen's annoyed. Serves her right, you're the prettier blonde." Chris remarked frankly, making me and Lara-Jean laugh.
"But how's the situation with Josh going?" I asked Lara-Jean, lowering my voice, happy to divert the topic of conversation.
"I don't know..." Lara-Jean pulled a pained facial expression and fiddled with the floral scrunchie holding her hair up in a slick, black ponytail. "He's..." She fell silent as our teacher strutted in and placed her books down on the desk with a bang.
I shuffled back around in my seat to face the front, making a mental note to follow up on the Josh issue later.
