Chapter 1
"Blueberry pancakes"Caroline woke up covered in her own sweat. Her heart was pounding hard against her chest and her eyes scanned the room. She relaxed a bit when she realized that she was safe inside her dorm and that it was just a nightmare. Well, the nightmare to be accurate. Caroline's mind was during her unconscious state more often than not invaded by nightmares in which her mother tended to die or get executed. Almost every morning she woke up on the verge of shouting her mother's name while the picture of her dead body was replaced with the silhouette of her room. It was beginning to get exhausting not to sleep properly.
As always Caroline had to recover for a short while until she could stand up and get dressed. Within minutes she was ready to leave to meet Bonnie and Elena. Her two best friends.
They were both at the jointly decided cafe before Caroline and had saved her a seat. She happily sighted after ordering a big cup of coffee. Was her life the best? Caroline had everything she needed. College, Elena, and Bonnie, Tyler.
Tyler.
The best graduation gift. From the big bad hybrid himself. Of course, Klaus is a murderous monster without the capability to feel empathy, but he had his moments when he could almost be mistaken for a good person. Caroline knew that all too well.
"Daydreaming?"
Bonnie asked with a curious tone and lifted eyebrows as Caroline got back to the real world.
"Sorry, I didn't sleep very well. I bet I have huge bags under my eyes"
Caroline answered apologetically and carefully stroke the bags under her eyes. Makeup did wonders, but some things could not be covered properly.
"Is it the nightmares again?"
Elena said next to her and sounded careful with her words which were unusual for being Elena. She acted mostly on impulse especially since she met Damon.
"Yeah"
A couple of months ago, Caroline would burst into tears only thinking about her mother. Now she had reached the state of grief that left her completely emotionless. She didn't smile, but she didn't cry. It was worse than tears.
Decided to cheer up the conversation, Caroline changed the subject.
"Did you guys hear Matt have a new girlfriend back in Mystic Falls?"
She smiled and felt genuine happiness for her friend. Every once in a while she caught herself thinking of the time they spent together. He sure was a nice guy.
And hot too
"Matt? Matt Donovan?" Elena said as Bonnie said "Wow".
"I know right? I think her name was something like Eloise. Exchange student"
Caroline continued and a big smile covered her mouth. Someone like Matt did definitely deserve a happy ending.
"Where did Matt even go to college?"
Bonnie asked the girls as the waitress arrived with their coffee. They thanked and tipped the waiter before continuing the conversation.
"I don't know. We kind of lost touch after all the Silas drama"
Elena answered and seemed to think back of an old memory. It was hard to see them ever being a couple. But, Elena is so changed and so is Matt. They were always meant to be nothing but friends anyways.
"It feels so weird to think that Matt and I ever were a couple. I think I always saw him as a friend"
She continued and literally confirmed Caroline's every thought.
