I groaned as I endured yet another kick to the stomach. This had been happening all night. Clicking my phone on, I decided it was time to wake her up. Using the tiny amount of space I had, I gathered all of my strength and pushed my best friend all the way off the bed.
"Ow, what'd you do that for?" Sophie called, popping her head up so I could see her face. I couldn't help but laugh a little at her hair sticking out all over the place.
"Oh please," I rolled my eyes. "You already know you spent the whole night kicking me."
"But you wouldn't have it any other way," she smiled and shot me a wink. "You know you love me."
"Don't be so sure," I smirked playfully before getting out of her bed to get ready for school.
This is a typical morning for us. I've been living alone since my parents died last year, so I spend most of my time at Sophie's. I make sure to check up on my house after school most days, but I don't like staying there alone so the majority of my nights are spent getting kicked by my best friend. She's a wild sleeper, but we've been best friends since second grade and I love her to death.
I grab a pair of leggings out of my section of clothes in her closet and she tosses a sweater at me. "That'll look cute with your grey boots."
I nod at Sophie and head into her bedroom to change. As soon as I'm done, I rush to beat her into the bathroom, where I quickly straighten my blonde hair and put on some light makeup.
It takes about forty minutes for both of us to finally get ready before getting in Sophie's car to drive to school. Since I don't have a car, she drives us to school and I ride the bus home because she has soccer practice in the fall.
"I'm so glad it's Friday," Sophie says, keeping her eyes on the deserted road.
"Me too. I'm really convinced Mrs. Porter's class is going to kill me," I complained, throwing my head back.
"Same. Calculus is already the worst, let alone with Mrs. Porter. At least we can suffer through it together."
"True." I sighed, turning on some music and with that we just sang and danced along to our Friday playlist the rest of the way to school.
"Soph, there's this killer party going on at Kyle's tomorrow. You coming?" A girl named Beth rushes up to her as we walk into first period. Beth is our school's resident gossip. She knows everything about everyone, which means she knows Sophie is an insane party girl.
"We'll be there," Sophie smirked at me.
"Thanks," I said sarcastically when Beth walked away. I hate parties. Sweaty, horny teenagers grinding all over each other and drinking cheap alcohol is definitely not my thing.
"Oh come on, you need to get out of the house and I really need to get laid," she whined. "Maybe you'll even meet a boy or something!"
"Fine," I sighed. "But I have zero interest in meeting any boys."
I'm not going to let my best friend go to a party by herself. Plus, she's stayed in with me all week so it's the least I can do.
Sophie squeals in excitement as class starts and I zone out for the rest of the period, wanting nothing more than to go home. I already know the stuff we're learning today anyways.
"Does this day feel weird to you?" Sophie asks me when the bell rings.
"No, it feels like a normal boring day at school. Why?"
"I don't know. I just feel like I'm missing something. Maybe I'm psychic," she wiggles her eyebrows at me.
"Yeah, keep telling yourself that," I laugh.
"I will," she smiles and turns down a different hallway. "But I gotta go, I'll see you at lunch!"
Waving her off, I keep walking straight through the crowds of obnoxious teenagers. I don't pay attention in any classes for the rest of the day. It's Friday, I'm done for the week.
High school is the worst and I can't wait to graduate this spring. Sophie and I have big plans to move to a city somewhere far away from this small town to go to college and never look back.
I don't talk to anyone in the rest of my classes, but that's fine with me. I'm perfectly content sitting quietly, doing my work, getting my straight A's, and leaving. Lunch with my best friend is nice though, she fills me in on all of the soccer team's drama and we can't help but make fun of the pettiness of it all. I really can't wait to graduate and get out of this stupid school.
At the end of the day, Sophie and I meet up again. The busses are near the soccer fields so we always walk out together. For some reason, my backpack feels unusually light today.
"Shoot, I forgot my history book! Can I use yours?" I ask her.
"I knew something weird would happen today!" She shouted. "You never forget anything. And you thought I was-"
"Soph," I cut her off. "I have to go. Can I just use your book?"
"You're in advanced, remember? We don't have the same one. It's fine, Layla. Just don't do the homework this time one time."
"I can't just not do the homework," I argued.
"You never even pay attention in history," she pointed out. "You hate it."
"Paying attention in class doesn't get me an A, but doing the homework does. I need to go get my book," I rolled my eyes at her.
"You won't make it in time to catch the bus. My practice is only an hour today, if you just wait at school I'll give you a ride," she offered.
I thought about it for a second, but I really didn't want to wait here and my house is out of her way.
"I'll be fine. It's like a half hour walk," I smiled.
"Promise?" She looked concerned. "It gets dark really early now that it's almost winter."
"Promise."
