"What if she doesn't want to be found?" I ask. The thought makes me shudder.
"I can assure you, she probably does!" Tris says encouragingly. But I shake my head.
"Amy was showing signs of depression recently. She might have committed suicide."
"Jeanine, don't go there!" Tris hisses quietly. She's been very sensitive about that topic since all was found in the chasm, but she's right. That's the last thing I want to think about.
We're in Amy's apartment. She wanted to live alone because she liked the occasional silence, she said. I lie down on her bed. It feels just like when we were children and I'd come over for sleepovers. I think it's the same mattress. Something rustles under the pillow and I sit up with a jolt, sliding my hand underneath. I pull out a piece of paper and gasp.
"Tris, look!" I shout and she comes rushing over. She was pacing around the room. My hands shake as I unfold the note and read it out loud.
"Jeanine, I know you'll see this. You're smart enough to be able to find it, after all. I'm sorry I left. I'm not dead, though. If you can find me, I'll return, but don't forget I'll be factionless. Don't worry, love, I don't have a death wish and I'll do my best to stay alive until we reunite. Come and find me, I'm near our favorite spot. Amy."
"Wow," Tris says quietly. I hold the note to my chest, nearest to my heart. A tear rolls down my cheek.
"She's been gone for less than 24 hours, but I miss her so much," I sob. Tris wraps her arm around me as I run my eyes.
"It'll be okay. We'll find her."
I smile and look up at Tris, smiling with hope. She looks back at me, beaming. Her expression softens as she leans in slowly.
Stop! A small voice in my head screams. But I don't want to. Tris's soft lips touch mine, and all my worries disappear. She's right. We will find Amy.
"Jeanine!" Evelyn calls, kicking the door open. I pull away from Tris, fear growing inside of me. I quickly wipe away a bit of saliva from my chin.
"What the hell is this?" She shouts. I jump to my feet.
"I'm... drunk..." I say weakly. It's a lie, but I think Evelyn bought it.
"You've always been extra truthful when your drunk!"
     Evelyn definitely bought it.
"Arrest these whores!" She orders, and two factionless men come up behind Tris and me, handcuffing is.
     "This is kinky," Tris whispers.
"Are you serious? Evelyn could be executing us and that's what's on your mind?" I snap.
"I don't think I can kill you, though," Evelyn says, walking up to me. She looks from me, then to Tris.
"But I can torture Tris," She says, pressing her lips against mine. A feeling so familiar, especially when she cups my face, I can't help but kiss her back. Evelyn pulls away, taking off my handcuffs.
"Take Tris away. Just leave her somewhere. Jeanine and I will stay here. And we'll keep the handcuffs!" Evelyn says, winking at me. I smile slightly. It's been so long since I've been it sexual contact with anyone, especially with Evelyn.
We watch as Tris is lead away, and I feel a pang if guilt in my heart. I should be looking for Amy, not hooking up with my ex-girlfriend. I bite my tongue.
You're not her ex-girlfriend! You were her side piece, just a little something to distract her from Marcus!
"You alright?" Evelyn asks, closing and locking the door. I nod, walking up to her.
"I'm alright. You're here, my love," I try out the new words. Evelyn snorts, and I laugh a little.
"That's a weird look on you, darling," She says, her hands tracing my collar. I find myself disagreeing with the words I said. I'm not sure I'm alright. I'm not sure I'm in love with Evelyn anymore.
The entire hour we spend together all I can think about is my kiss with Tris. It made me feel something new. Something... warm.
"And you're sure you're alright?" Evelyn asks. She's on top of me, her hair in her face. I nod.
"I said I'm fine," I say and kiss her viciously. I'll make myself love this woman. "Wait, no I'm not. I want to find Amy."
I rush to where Evelyn threw my dress and pull it back on. It's a bit wrinkled from lying on the floor, but it'll do.
"You should get dressed. I've gotta to!" I say and run outside. I forgot the note, but the content is burned into my mind. I will find Amy, I know it.
