~you're born with a specific defect and your soulmate has the opposite one (one person is born with a blind right eye and the other is born with a blind left eye). whenever you see your soulmate for the first time, it heals.
Jane Eleanor Hopper has always been deaf in her right ear and was patiently awaiting for her knight in shining armor to come and save her. It was all she could think about and she couldn't wait until she could finally be a normal teenage girl.
All of her friends had found their soulmates at around the age of fourteen, but here's Jane still waiting at the age of nineteen. Her father told her to just wait and her perfect man will come along and heal her. Easy for him to say, he has mom. She had thought to herself countless time. Her parents found each other at the age of eleven. Their love story was adorable and she couldn't help but feel envy.
Jane slowly awakened from a long night's sleep and, like every night, dreamt of how her own love story will fold out before her. She reluctantly rolled herself out of bed and trotted down stairs.
"Good morning sweetie!" Her mom greeted her with a chirpy tone. What's good about it? Jane gave a small smile and embraced her mother in a tight hug. Her mother's hugs always cheered her up when she was feeling down.
"Hey there's my Ellie girl!" She heard her father's booming voice and she pulled apart from her mother, smiling at the nickname her father gave her when she was younger.
"Are you excited for move in day?" Today was Jane's move in day for college and she couldn't be dreading it anymore. She frowned at her mother's words and shook her head. Her mother sighed and looked at her husband, begging for help.
"Ellie," Jane looked up and met her father's eyes with her big brown ones, "it's going to be great. You'll have a blast!" Jane didn't feel like continuing this conversation, so she gave a fake smile and finally spoke up.
"Yeah. I'm sure I will."

The Hopper family arrived on the campus of Hawkins University and Jane immediately felt her anxiety start to kick in. She stared at the school with her parents by her side, suitcase and another box in her hand. She didn't even realize she was crying until she felt a hot tear hit her thumb that was on top of the box in her hands.
"Alright honey, you're dorm is this way." Her parents thankfully didn't notice the stray tear the fell and pointed towards a building that was across the courtyard. She followed her parents, trailing closely behind them, admiring the beauty of the campus.
They make it to the building and enter inside and walk quickly to Jane's new temporary home. Her mom opens it and her father sets the boxes he was carrying on the floor. He then turns to Jane and takes the suitcase and box out of her hand.
"Sweetie, I hate to leave you alone right now, but I need to get back into town for work. I love you and call us whenever you can. Love you bunches!" Her mother hugs her and walks out as her father walks up to her and engulfs her in a huge bear hug.
"I love you, Ellie. Be careful and be safe. Don't want you this pretty little face to get messed up now do we?" Jane chuckled into her father's chest and reluctantly pulled away to stare into her father's now glossy eyes.
"I love you, Dad." He ruffles her hair and kisses her head.
"Have fun, but not too much fun!" He yells as he walks out of the room. Jane giggles as he shuts the door.
She goes to her boxes and begins to unpack her belongings, before she hears the door open behind her and she is greeted by a fairly tall red-head with a suitcase in her hands.
"Oh, um, hi! You must be Jane! I'm Max." She notices that she has no defect, meaning she has most definitely found her soulmate. Jane sighs and frown a little before she quickly collects herself and stands up to shake the fiery red-head's hand.
"I'm Jane." She says and gives a small smile. Max returns the smile and sets her suitcase on the floor. She walks to the door frame and yells down the hallway to someone.
"Come on you doofus!" A tall dark skinned boy enters the room with an armful of boxes.
"Really? No 'Thanks Lucas.' or 'You're the best boyfriend ever Lucas'. All I get is that?" Max rolls her eyes playfully and gives him a kiss on the cheek, making the boy blush.
"Jane, this is my boyfriend Lucas." He shows a small smile and holds out his hand, to which Jane responds with the same gesture.
"Lucas, where's Mike? Is he still trying the bring those boxes in? Wuss." Lucas gives a simple shrug and begins to speak when he is interrupted by a tall lanky boy entering the room. Jane looks up at him and they make eye contact.
"Jane, this is Mike." Jane suddenly realizes that she is now able to hear out of her right ear and Mike could now hear out of his left ear. They lock eyes in realization.
They were soulmates.
