thomas
Life without soulmates.
That was something Thomas could get behind. It wasn't anybody's business who he was before the system collapsed, and with his college classes going relatively well, he couldn't ask for much more. For once in his life, he wasn't worried about what people would think of him not having a soulmate. He was just happy to have a relationship. Walking around in public didn't bother him so much, and walking near other couples didn't make him automatically self-conscious.
He was pretty set when it came to that department.
He could definitely see that Alexander was struggling a little more, though. It was understandable. The other man grew up with a soulmate, he was obviously going to handle the change a little differently. Thomas could almost see his boyfriend switching between trying to mentally communicate and verbally talking. It was a struggle for him, no doubt, but he was trying and that was all that mattered.
As for Alexander and Eliza, they were arguably closer as friends than they were as soulmates. Considering she didn't live very far away from them, she spent a lot of time at their apartment. She spent time with Alex and Thomas, but everyone knew she really came over for Cat.
And another one adjusting to life was Cat. Now that he had two people constantly with him, he was enjoying the double petting, plus the extra from Eliza. The fat thing was getting more and more spoiled by the day. Honestly, he seemed to be the one benefitting from the change more than anyone.
That is to say, Thomas wasn't surprised to see Eliza laying on the ground playing with Cat and Alex sitting on the counter, watching with a bowl of ramen noodles. Jefferson came in and set down the grocery bags, taking a second to admire the beauty that was his apartment.
"When'd you get here, Schuyler?" He asked. He gave Alex a quick kiss and started putting away the groceries.
"About an hour ago," she replied. "I missed Cat."
"But not me? Wow, Elizabeth Schuyler, I am hurt." Alex faked a gasp and threw a hand over his heart.
"No you aren't, we both know I love Cat more."
"Yeah, that's fair. I'm pretty sure the fatass loves you more than me anyway."
"Maybe it's because you casually call him fatass like it's his name?" Eliza suggested,
Thomas looked back just in time to see the two having a conversation through facial expressions. For a second, a pang of jealousy hit him in the chest. If he didn't know any better, he could easily say that they still had control of their chips. Which was obviously unlikely.
But then again, how would he even know if his chip didn't work in the first place? It's not like he could really test it out. Or even if his chip didn't work, that didn't mean Alexander's and Eliza's didn't.
Okay, so maybe not everything was perfect. As previously stated, it was an adjustment. Getting past the fact that his boyfriend had a soulmate before him was something Thomas had yet to do. He knew he could trust Alex, but it didn't really soothe his nerves to know that Alex and Eliza still knew each other that well.
"It's getting late, Schuyler," Thomas said before he could even think about what he was saying. "Maybe you should head home."
Without question, Eliza agreed happily. It made Jefferson feel bad to kick her out like that but. . .
Actually, other than jealousy, Thomas didn't have a reason.
After she left, Alex looked curiously at his boyfriend.
"Okay, what was that about?" he asked, hopping off the counter. He put his bowl in the sink and looked at Thomas, arms crossed.
"What was what about?"
"You're being weird," Alexander explained. "Since when is five o'clock late?"
"I have an early class tomorrow."
"You've had the same schedule for the last two months."
"I'm auditing." Thomas put all of the grocery bags inside of each other and stuck them under the sink.
Hamilton, obviously still not convinced, let the subject drop.
"Whatever you say there, Tommy." Alex uncrossed his arms and pulled out his phone. "Oh so you'll never guess who messaged me today."
"Hmm?"
"My brother."
