Brokengaze hopped up onto the rough tree stump as her small group of cats gathered before her curiously, their eyes glinting in the midday sunlight. The black she-cat raised her head high and called out to the small crowd authoritively. "My friends, change is upon us." She began, chosing each word precisely as she spoke. "I am going to speak to StarClan at the MoonPool right away to attempt to receive the nine lives I'd need to create a new clan for the lake."
She paused as ripples of surprise and excitement traveled through the gathered cats, drowning out the couple concerned whispers. "I know this seems... Impossible. But there is danger approaching and we need to be ready. I don't know when it will arrive, but we shall unite as our own clan." Brokengaze meowed assertively, her tail-tip flicking to and fro.
"That sounds brilliant, Brokengaze! But please tell us who that strange she-cat is?" Thunderheart piped up from the front of the crowd, his deep blue eyes locked onto the unfamiliar tabby cat. Brokengaze had almost forgot she was there, the loner was listening so attentively. It was as if she had been around for moons, she looked to fit in so well.
"This is Meowzie. She wishes to join us. Bloodpaw and I rescued her from these two fox-hearted toms that say they wanted to take her to... 'Wolfstar'." There were a few gasps at the mentioned name, and Cinderheart was the first to respond.
"You don't think it's your brother, do you?" The gray she-cat fretted sullenly, her blue eyes flickering between each of her four kits. Before Brokengaze could answer her warrior, Flamestripe snorted arrogantly.
"Of course it's him! That piece of fox-dung is always up to no good! He must he building his own clan to attack us!" The dark orange tabby growled quietly, his pale amber eyes raging to defend his friends. Brokengaze sighed heavily, her mind whirling.
"I do believe it is Wolfstorm. How StarClan gave him nine lives... They must've turned mouse-brained or something, but we are not going down without a fight. We are now a clan of our own. I must appoint a deputy before I depart." The black she-cat announced, her eyes darting from cat to cat. I know... I know the choice...
"I say these words before StarClan so they may hear and approve my choice!" Her words rang out into the surrounding forest. "Thunderheart will be the new deputy!"
"Thunderheart! Thunderheart! Thunderheart!" The cats chanted his name in tradition, barely surprised Brokengaze had chosen him. The long-haired she-cat raised her tail for silence, and she continued to speak.
"Now that Meowzie has decided to join us, she must take on a warrior name. For the next few moons, Sandfeather shall teach the ways of our ancestors and their code. Meowzie step forward, please." Brokengaze instructed firmly, her eyes gentle as the tabby and white she-cat reluctantly stepped up to the tree stump. Her amber-green eyes looked nervous as she returned Brokengaze's stare. The black cat threw her muzzle to the sky and recited the ancient words of the naming ceremony.
"I, Brokengaze, leader of my clan, call upon my ancestors to look down upon this she-cat. She wishes to learn your ways and join us in the path of a warrior. I wish to give her a warrior name in her turn." Pausing, Brokengaze jumped down from the stump and loomed over Meowzie, her red and blue eyes glistening brightly in assurance.
"Meowzie, do you promise to uphold the Warrior Code, and protect your clan, even at the cost of your life?" The question hung in the air as Meowzie searched for the right reply.
"Y-yes. I do!" She straightened up and her voice strengthened, a fresh determination rushing into her glowing oculars. Her pink nose twitched along with her translucent whiskers, satisfied with herself at the moment.
"Then by the powers of StarClan, I give you your warrior name. From this moment on you shall be known as Fernheart. StarClan honors your eagerness to learn the Warrior Code, and I welcome you into the life of a warrior." Brokengaze concluded by resting her muzzle on Fernheart's forehead softly. "Lick my shoulder." She whispered to the tabby, and she did so. Fernheart stepped back as the cats surrounding her began to chant her new name.
"Fernheart! Fernheart! Fernheart!"
Brokengaze gave a small nod of approval, facing her friends courageously. "Now I shall make my way to MoonPool. Thunderheart is in charge while I am gone. I will ask our ancestors what to do about a medicine cat. I will be back by sunhigh tomorrow. May StarClan keep us all safe."
~~~~~~
"Brokenstar! Brokenstar! Brokenstar!" It was as if the StarClan warriors were chanting her name all over again as the black she-cat stood before her clan. The clan cats were delighted to have a new leader, and they were eager to become the first descendants of a brand new clan.
"My friends, not everything is well. We have a threat in our midst. My brother has created his own clan and may try to attack us, so we must work hard to strengthen ourselves. We'll need recruits, whether they are kittypet, loner, or rogue. We never know, we may find another Firestar." Brokenstar instructed encouragingly, flexing her claws on the bark of the tree stump. Meows of agreement rolled through her group of gathered cats.
"Since we are now a clan, we shall join the other clans at the gathering at every full moon." The black she-cat continued, feeling the new sense of authority wash over her in waves. She itched to lead her clan for many, many generations into the future. "We also will need to find out who StarClan wants to be our new medicine cat."
"Me! Me, Brokenstar!" A tiny voice piped up from the back of the crowd, and Brokenstar looked down to see Robinpaw making his way toward the front of the gathered cats. Cinderheart gasped at her son, surprise and what seemed like disappointment flashing through her blue irises. "I have had dreams from StarClan! I cannot say what they are about, but I know they want me to be medicine cat. They have chosen me!" The gray and brown mottled apprentice chirped excitedly, his amber eyes bright.
Brokenstar was quiet for a moment, then she nodded. "Very well. Robinpaw shall be the next medicine cat, and it is obvious StarClan will teach him within his dreams." She announced to the others.
"Robinpaw! Robinpaw! Robinpaw!" His clanmates began to cheer joyously, except Cinderheart, who remained silent. Robinpaw's siblings were the ones trying to chant the loudest, pride for their brother apparent in their expressions. Once the noise died down, Sandfeather decided to speak up from beside her brother Flamestripe.
"Brokenstar, what shall our clan name be?" Her voice was soft as she asked her leader anxiously, her amber eyes curious. Brokenstar grinned at her warrior, feeling the scar on her face arise with a small burning sensation. She could hear a small voice echoing through the air and brushing against her ears. "Death shall rise to defeat the Storm..."
She knew exactly what to name her new clan, and she didn't question her ancestors for it either. This is what StarClan wanted. This is Brokenstar's destiny. Throwing her muzzle to the sky, Brokenstar triumphantly yowled for all to hear.
"We shall now be known as DeathClan!"
