I fumbled with the keys to my house. I slammed open the door. My mother was on the phone, mid sentence. When I opened the door, she looked up her eyes wide, and her mouth hanging open.
"¡Lance! ¡Llegaste a casa!" She cried, rushing up to me and throwing her arms around me. I gasped, and suddenly the tears started falling down.
"Where have you been?" She demanded.
"Mamá..." I cried, tugging at her desperately. My emotions were off the chart. "I'm sorry... I..." I stopped, remembering what Keith said. The words hung heavy in my chest. He was probably watching.
"Estos chicos me persiguieron, mamá. Corrí tan rápido y me perdí. ¡Pero encontré mi camino a casa! Estoy en casa ahora, mamá." I said, forcing my voice to stop trembling. At least it sounded reasonable, my mother always knew I panicked when something didn't go right.
"Oh, mi pobre hijo. Thank goodness you found your way home." My mother said. "Now, come and get some dormir."
I walked up to my room, and got ready for bed. When I slipped under the covers, sleep overtook me instantly.
