Authors' POV

"What brings me here?" Elizabeth echoed, attempted to buy some time for her to think of a good lie. In the end, she decided to be blunt. "You." She tried not to smile at the reaction Kai had. His eyebrows raised, and he seemed surprised by her words. Before he could question it, she said, "Or, more specifically, the thing in your possession."

His surprised faded to suspicion. "I don't think I know what you mean."

"Don't act like you don't have it, I can tell. You can't hide the trident's power from a descendant of Poseidon himself."

Kai's lips turned into a crooked grin, showing off his pearly white teeth. "A descendant of Poseidon, huh?" Suddenly in a flick of his tail, he was in front of her. "I bet you'd be really valuable to the right seller, darling." His finger was under her chin, forcing her to look up so he could examine her features. "Pretty too."

Stunned for only a moment, Elizabeth's hand flew to her dagger, no longer concerned with getting him to trust her. "You can try pretty boy, but I'm quite sure I could beat you in a fight" she looked him dead in the eye.

He hummed thoughtfully for a moment before he shrugged, agreeing with her statement, and leaned against the rusty table in the room, not seeming too worried with her threat. "So you're...what? A royal soldier here to take me in for stealing the Trident?"

"W-What? No—"

"Ah~" he said, "So you're a thief? Come here to try and steal my haul?" For the first time a slight frown dipped into his lips. He paused then. "Well, whatever you are, darling, I don't think you'll find what you're looking for." His manic grin returned. "It's not here~" he sang.

"No, I'm not a- wait, where is it then? I've heard of it and at least want a glance! I know Atlantis would never let me see it in fear that I'd steal it! And I was sure I could sense you carrying it!" She tried desperately to put panic into her voice.

Kai paused at her words, considering. "Why should I tell you? You were about to kill me a few seconds ago," his head tilted to the side, his messy brown hair with gold tips fell into his eyes.

"Correction, I wasnt going to kill you, its just I was threatening to. I mean, you threatened to kidnap me, yet I'm still here!" Elizabeth said, getting defensive.

"I never said that~ I just said you were pretty~" he said again, in a singsong voice. He brushed his hand through his hair, getting it out of eyes for s moment before it fell back again. His eyes were danced with amusement.

"It didn't sound like that," she huffed. Her eyes narrowed, and she quickly twined her blue and white hair into a braid.

He shrugged. "Make it what you will." He met her eyes. "Are you done? Because I need to get going," his voice was growing annoyed.

She couldn't let him leave. She needed him. Her honor as a princess and as a descendant of Poseidon depended on this. "Take me with you!" Elizabeth burst out. "I-I mean, if you would?" She started playing the innocent card. "Please?" She made puppy dog eyes, trying to look as hopeful as possible.

He hesitated, glancing at her. "You really just want to see it?" he asked.

"Yes, that's all!" she chirped, "I promise not to be a bother!"

"...I suppose you can come," Kai caved in.. In truth, he didn't like to be alone, it helped him feel less...crazy.

She nodded, a bit too eagerly.

This is going to be interesting, they both thought as they swam out the door, a new tension wafting after them in the dark water.
