Kai's P.O.V
He looked back, his eyes blank. "You don't want to sleep in the sand, do you? It's not like I'm gonna steal anything~" Kai paused, considering his words, "Probably not anyway."
His words caused Elizabeth to sigh, more than likely in frustration. "Anyways, what's your story... I've told you mine."
Kai looked at her for a moment before he answered, "My family died in a fight when the rebels raided our hometown, I was 7. I ran to my old friend, who was 18, and asked him to help save my family. He said he would, and told me to hide. You know what he did? He ran. He didn't try to help. He was a coward." Kai let out a sigh before he continued. "When I figured it out, I ran back to my house to find my parents and sister murdered, on the floor, dead. After that, I was on my own. I didn't trust anyone because I knew they'd betray me in the end. So I got money by stealing. And I was good at it, so I didn't stop as I got older, and so here I am today."
"Why don't you try to get a new life?" Elizabeth ask, tilting her head sideways.
He shrugged, humming an "i dunno". "I guess since this is what I've always done, I didn't think I could do much of anything else." Kai ran a hand through his hair, slightly chewing on his lip.
"Maybe we can go to the palace, together. I can go back and apologize for leaving, and say that you found the theif with the trident and convinced me to come back while bringing it back" Elizabeth suggested.
He met her eyes. "Why would you do that for me?" He wasn't being suspicious, more like curious.
"I don't know, I just for some stupid reason, don't want to lose you, you already feel too close to me for barely knowing you" Elizabeth shook her head, sighing again.
For once, an actual, sincere smile spread across his lips. "Thanks, I'll think about it." They had neared the large mansion, his friend, who owned this estate, happened to be VERY wealthy. Thanks to Kai, at least, for getting him a few priceless items.
He looked at her. "We'll have to break into a window, you okay with that?" he grinned, "If not, you can sleep out here, with the sharks."
"Fine, I get along great with the sharks, I used to have a baby one as a pet in Mariana!" Elizabeth seemed slightly offended. "And you can do the window breaking, I'm only following you."
He winked and started to swim up to the house's side. He tapped the window, as if he was checking it's thickness. Quickly and swiftly, he punched the window with such force it shattered. His knuckles started to bleed. "Merladies first." He spread his arms out dramatically.
"So that means you're going first?" Elizabeth joked, crossing her arms and starting to float on her back.
He rolled his eyes. "Whatever~" and then, he swam in through the shattered window, calling back behind him, "I'd be a pretty girl anyway~!"
"Would be? I thought you were!" She fired back, following him into the window, and draping a piece of kelp across his head.
He, in turn, flicked it like a girl with long hair might, putting a hand on his hip. "Pretty indeed." Kai turned to her, sticking his tongue out.
Elizabeth stuck her tongue back out at him, before grabbing It and tossing it aside.
Elizabeth's P.O.V
Elizabeth watched as Kai tapped on a sleeping glow fish's glass sphere. The little fish jolted awake, it's blue-ish light flickering on. As it awoke, the other fish noticed Kai and Elizabeth's presence, and the large room lit up. The mansion was decorated with gold accents everywhere and made of pure marble. If elegance was a house, this was it.
"Wow... This is beautiful!" Elizabeth exclaimed. She ran her fingers along the wall, taking in all the beauty of the home. Her eyes were drawn to all of the smallest details in the area, from the ornate pillars to tiny carvings in the walls.
"Most of it's stolen goods," Elizabeth met Kai's eyes as he gave her an amused glance "And most of it, I stole." He started swimming up to the second floor, where Elizabeth assumed the bedrooms were.
"Way to ruin it" Elizabeth mumbled, grumpily following Kai upstairs.
Kai opened a door, a room with light blue walls was revealed. Slim gold designs swirled like wallpaper on the walls. A king-sized bed laid in the center of the room. "This is the master suit, you can stay here." He looked back at her, starting to float over to the door next to the suite's. "I'll be right here, if you need me. But I'll probably be asleep in a few minutes." He saluted her and disappeared behind the large wooden door.
"Ok," Elizabeth called, climbing into the bed, too distracted by the thought if the mansion to actually close her eyes.
It had been 20 minutes.
Not being able to fall asleep she got up and started hunting for Kai's room, wondering if he was awake.
Finding Kai's room was easy enough for Elizabeth, so as she arrived outside the door she lightly knocked, calling out to him. "Kai...? You in here? Sort if I'm waking you up, but I cant sleep." She waited impatiently outside the door.
After a while of waiting, Kai opened the door. "I wasn't asleep, it's okay," he said, his voice rough from not talking for a while. He opened the door wider for her to come in.
Swimming in, Elizabeth sat down on the bed, which hadn't been un-made. "Sorry for bothering you, as I said before, I cant sleep"
Kai's P.O.V
"You aren't bothering me, it's fine," he said quickly, wanting Elizabeth to know she wasn't. He glanced at her, the little amount of moonlight dancing on his scales as he turned. "Is the bed not comfortable?" he asked.
"No it's not that, I just... I dont know" Elizabeth trailed off, but Ares knew how she felt.
"I get it," Kai smiled slightly. "You can hang out here, if you want. I don't plan on sleeping anyway, and your company would be appreciated." He looked at her, an unrecognizable emotion playing behind his eyes... sadness, almost? "I don't like to be alone." His words were quiet, hesitant, but still clear.
"Really?" She questioned, obviously astonished at his words, many of the people he had met thought him to actually like being alone.
He nodded with a shrug of his shoulders. "Never liked it." His eyes didn't leave hers. "Is that bad?"
"No! No, I just assumed..." Elizabeth said rather forcefully, shaking her head. "That's not what I meant at all..."
His sad-ish smile grew smaller.
Kai waited a long moment before doing something unexpected, to him and probably her. He floated over to her and sat beside her, their tails touching, and laid his head on her shoulders. Before she could do anything, he mumbled, his eyes closed, "...Can I stay like this...?"
