"You were too late..."
The words haunted Magnus' every thought. He couldn't bear to think of Alec, his soulmate, marrying someone else. "How have I been so blind?!" he exclaimed woefully from behind a large glass of champagne, that was suspiciously shaped exactly like a champagne bottle.
"Magnus do stop moping, Ragnor said glumly, tired of listening to the warlock's heartbroken lamentations. Magnus refused to be consoled, he had lost the love of his life. A phone call caused Ragnor to lose the last shred of his patience.
"By the Angel, Magnus! That blasted phone won't stop ringing so you should stop feeling sorry for yourself and just answer it!" he exclaimed in exasperation. Magnus sighed deeply and with a snap of his fingers the phone was in his perfectly polished fingers.
"Magnus Bane, High Warlock of Brokl-"
"Oh I know who you are! It's me, Isabelle, Isabelle Lightwood," Izzie interrupted. Magnus was about to hang up, the Lightwoods had caused him enough pain.
"Alec wants you at his wedding," she begged, speaking quickly and with a muffled tone, as if she didn't want to be overheard.
"Sunset at the institute, please be there," she hurried, then hung up. Magnus held the phone in his hand, staring blankly at the wall. He didn't know how to react, his thoughts were racing. Alec wanted him at the wedding? Why? Magnus clenched his fists in frustration, how could Alec be so cruel? Magnus could imagine nothing worse than seeing the man he loved standing in front of the crowd of his friends and family, promising his short life to a woman he did not love. It was the most painful thought Magnus could have, besides the open wound that was the memory of his mother's death.
"You will be expected to go, you know" Ragnor said, rather rudely Magnus thought. He flashed his cat eyes at the green warlock who got the message quite clearly. "I'll leave you be then," he said, hurriedly standing up. "I'll show myself out."
"You know where the door is," Magnus answered blandly, then stayed silent until he was sure that Ragnor had left and a good thirty seconds after. He then stood up and stepped onto the balcony. Although the noisy streets of Brooklyn at the dinner rush hour was nothing in comparison to the beauty of the streets of 18th century Paris he found it rather homely. He found himself wondering how the poor mundanes managed with their short life spans. In such a short amount of time they were born, got married, had children and died. There seemed to be no time in their busy schedules to travel or appreciate the world around them.
It was as he saw the sun begging to go down that Magnus realised he also had a busy schedule, and needed to hurry. If Alec wanted him at the wedding Magnus would be there, but he wasn't going to go down without a fight, he wouldn't let Alec go.
