"By the angel...this is awful!" Alec exclaimed, pacing back and forth in his office. He hadn't sat down since the night before when he had questioned everyone in view about the mysterious drawings that had been on his arm. He was glad, for the first time, that Clary was there to draw such an accurate sketch of them. No one had ever seen anything of the sort, until one seemingly drunk warlock had admitted that he knew of them. His response made no sense but after a while of interrogation the warlock revealed that it was the language of his father, but he was struggling to understand it.
"My 'soulmate'," Alec made air quotations around the word, "is a demon. This is the worst thing possible!" he exclaimed, sinking into his chair and burying his face into his hands, sighing deeply. Isabelle looked at him nervously, then kindly put her hand on his shoulder. "Alec, relax you can't be sure of that yet," she said kindly. "We'll keep searching okay? We'll find her."
"Yeah. It's not a big deal Alec, don't worry. We just need to examine the books and see what it means. It'll help us track her down and I'm sure she'll be glad to see you," Jace said confidently, patting Alec's back and then walking off, no doubt going to boast to Clary about his great interrogation skills. Isabelle shook her head and sighed, looking at Alec worriedly.
"Alec, you're hiding something," she said knowingly, a slight smile playing on her lips. "You can tell me anything you know, I just want to help out my big bro."
"Isabelle...I don't know if I can do this. How come this never happened to Jace? Or you? You two always have someone to be with...one of them has to be your soulmate..." Alec sighed, pulling on his hair anxiously and looking up at the worried face of his sister who shrugged and smiled.
"Jace and I haven't found a soulmate, because neither of us were looking for one. We've both just tried to find our own love but you...something about you must just be looking for a true love and the angel has provided that for you. I've seen it happen before," she explained kindly, looking at her brother who nodded, trying to understand what was happening to him.
"Could I...write him a message?" Alec asked, looking at Isabelle curiously and rubbing his forehead. Isabelle smiled proudly at him, and it was then that Alec realised what he had said. He groaned and hid his face in his hands, closing his eyes and wishing that something, anything would take her away or distract his sister from the situation he had placed himself in.
"Alec...why'd you not tell me?" she asked happily, smiling and rubbing his back comfortingly.
"What would our parents think? A gay shadowhunter is a disgrace..." he said sadly, shaking his head. "What if my soulmate is a girl? What if I can never truly love her?" he mumbled, half talking to himself. "At the same time...if it's not a girl, if my soulmate is truly the man of my dreams...we'll never be able to be together. And that's not even including the fact that he could be a demon!" he exclaimed. He was close to tears, not wanting to accept what he had just told Isabelle, even though he had secretly known for years.
"Well mum and dad would be shocked, but they're our parents!" Isabelle exclaimed cheerfully. "They'll love you so much no matter what, like all good parents would," she said softly, smiling. Alec sighed shaking his head and wishing that he could confide in his sister but he knew that he couldn't. He had kept his parents secrets for years, he didn't need to worry his sister any more than she already was.
"I can't even think about this Isabelle, please just leave," Alec said slowly, and Isabelle recognised the tone. With a nod she walked off and closed the door behind her, leaving Alec alone to come to terms with his thoughts. Without properly thinking it through, Alec picked up a pen and slowly looked at his hand.
So, I guess we're soulmates he wrote. When a reply didn't come after five minutes, Alec gave up looking and sighed, shaking his head at his own stupidity. Well, if you are then I hope you find me before it's too late
