Alec was standing at the alter, his heart pounding. He dreaded what he knew would soon come. He barely even noticed the people gathering into the room and taking their seats, chatting cheerfully. He barely noticed when Maryse spoke to him, but he mustered a smile and shook his father's hand. When the two walked away he turned to Jace and let out a nervous sigh. Jace obviously sensed his parabatai's nerves and patted his shoulder kindly.
"Alright, you ready for this?" he asked kindly, adjusting Alec's gold adorned suit.
"Ready as I'll ever be," Alec responded, sighing in desperation. "I'm glad you're here with me."
"I wouldn't be anywhere else," Jace responded, looking at his parabatai with brotherly love. Alec nodded but his stomach sank even more. It was actually happening. He took his place at the front , trying to ignore the conversations from around the rest of the room, and the longing glances that Jace kept sending to Clary. Brother Jeremiah slammed his staff into the floor.
"Attention everybody, the ceremony is about to begin," his voice echoed loudly and the room immediately fell silent.
Isabelle walked down first, dressed in an elegant gold dress that clung to her figure, and holding a cushion containing a wrist-band and a necklace made of gold. Lydia soon followed, in a golden strapless dress that showed plenty of cleavage. Alec caught Jace's glance and wished he could feel the same way about it. Alec kept his eyes on the blood red roses in his wife-to-be's hands to stop his gaze from wandering to the window. Her slow pace was agonising, he just wanted it to end. Lydia's smile made it even worse, she genuinely wanted this marriage.
With a loving smile, she reached Alec and took the gold band, placing it on Alec's wrist. Her hands lingered too long, but he realised he would have to get used to it. They were husband and wife, after all. He forced himself to compress his nerves and muster a weak smile, as he stoof behind her and placed the gold necklace around her neck, his heart shattering slightly as he saw how happy she looked as she lightly touched the pendant.
"It is time for Alec Lightwood and Lydia Branwell to mark each other with the Wedded Union rune." The voice of Brother Jeremiah echoed again, and Lydia grasped Alec's hand.
"A rune on the hand a rune on the heart. A union is born," Brother Jeremiah said somberly. Alec nodded, doing his best to not let the pain in his chest show. Lydia took the stele from Isabelle and turned to face Alec, taking his hand in hers and preparing to draw the rune that would be the first stage in binding them together until death. Before she got a chance to begin drawing a loud bang caused everyone to jump. The doors had been flung open. Alec felt his whole world begin to fall in on itself.
