season one, episode two
____

yugyeom gazed in his mirror, fingers pressing into the cold edges of the sink. he thought about changing into more casual clothing, but he was used to wearing a uniform to school and he would feel strange wearing anything else, even though his mom said there was no dress code at his new high school. even through all the ways he had tried to trick himself into thinking this was a normal day at his normal school, his stomach still broiled with nerves.

he didn't see any reason why he should have to suffer through the last three weeks of school anyway. he had taken his exams before moving so there wasn't much to do in class except wait for graduation and summer to begin. he had tried to convince his mom to let him drop out (not many of the jobs in town required a high school diploma anyway) but she had denied.

he glanced at the clock on the wall; it was time to stop moping in the bathroom and go downstairs for breakfast. he sighed and left the room, grabbing his backpack and then his hoodie at the last second, deciding that if he got weird looks for wearing a uniform, he could slip the hoodie over it and no one would know.

right when he was leaving his room, just about to shut his door, the image of the giant came back into his mind. maybe he could get some answers at school.

"hey kiddo", his mom greeted him as he sat at the table. he smiled, a bit less enthusiastic than usual. she set the plate of food down before him and he started eating, his mom watching him all the while with a look of worry. "are you excited for your first day?"

yugyeom shrugged, though she could understand the meaning behind its indifference. she knew him so well. too well.

"don't worry, honey", she assured him, rubbing his back for a second. "you're going to love it. i loved huntsville high when i went there."

his mom loved a lot of things he didn't.

he quickly finished his food and said goodbye to his mom before heading out. the sun was shining today, the only hint that there had been a storm the previous day were the pillowy white clouds. yugyeom walked down the cobbled streets with his backpack hanging on his shoulders and his sweatshirt wrapped around his waist, observing the people on the streets. already the town was busy with people going to work and school. a flock of jellies flew threw the sky above, startling yugyeom. he had never seen a jelly in real life; their pink, gooey bodies and long tentacles were slightly unnerving.

holmfirth highschool was small and made of bricks, with a fenced courtyard out front, scattered with basketball hoops and benches. there were several kids outside, talking to their friends before classes started. yugyeom moved past them to enter through the front doors, pulling out the paper that had his locker number and code, his classes, and a map of the school. he had ten minutes to find his locker and try to learn the layout of the school.

he went to his locker first, putting his books and lunch inside. his mind wandered, remembering what jackson had told him the previous day. he wondered if he had made good on his promise and told his friends about yugyeom.

he didn't have to wonder for long because just as he was shutting his locker, a skinny, tan hand reached out and stopped it. yugyeom looked to the side, into a the smiling face of a boy.

he was probably only a couple inches shorter than yugyeom, with dark brown hair brushing against his sharp cheekbones and caramel colored skin. a wide smile stretched his plump lips. his body was long and skinny, his oversized black hoodie nearly falling over his bony shoulders.

"hey, you're yugyeom, right?"

his voice was surprisingly deep, with a clear thai accent. he tilted his head slightly as he gazed at yugyeom, waiting for him to answer.
