season one, episode three
____

nightfall in holmfirth was a special kind of amazing.

all the humans went to sleep, eyelids heavy, ready to start the next morning rejuvenated. as they dozed safely in their homes, creatures poured into the cobbled streets. trolls, some made of rock and others of trees, wind, or occasionally water, transformed into moving creatures under the moonlight, sneaking through the shadows, digging through trash cans and scourging for food. stray littens crept over fences, hissing at each other and fighting for food. if one listened hard enough, they might be able to hear the sound of invisible fairies giggling.

it was at this time that yugyeom lie in bed, staring at his wall. he simply couldn't sleep, despite the knowledge that he had school early that next morning. he supposed it didn't matter much; while everyone took their finals, he could nap, and the teachers wouldn't mind.

it turned out holmfirth was filled with many strange creatures, creatures yugyeom had never even expected to meet in his lifetime. there was the hind boy, and that giant. mostly he was worried about the giant. he didn't think youngjae posed any sort of danger. in fact, he kinda liked the boy.

that giant, though....he needed to learn more about it. something was pulling him to it, as if it had a secret waiting just for yugyeom's ears.

tap, tap, tap.

yugyeom froze, eyes wide, and pulled his blankets over his head, breathing heavily. something had just tapped on his window.

his mind ran wild. 'what if it's the giant?', he thought. 'what if it's come to squash my home, with me and my mom in it, simply for laying eyes upon him?'

the knock sounded again, louder this time, and he squeezed his eyes shut. no, it couldn't be the giant. what giant would bother to knock before killing someone? no, it had to be something else. possibly something more dangerous.

"yugyeom, let me in!"

he recognized that voice. it wasn't what he imagined a giant voice to be (deep and rumbling as if the mountains themselves were speaking). it was a familiar, accented tone that he had heard for the first time just that day.

he lifted the blankets from his head, turning around in his bed to meet eyes with bambam through the window. the thai boy was crouched on his fire escape in a black hoodie that engulfed his skinny body. yugyeom stood up, moving to the window, hyperaware that he was dressed in baggy pajama pants patterned with power rangers.

bambam grinned as he pushed the window up, his white teeth shining against the dark as if they were their own little stars.

"what are you doing here?", yugyeom asked.

"i wanted to show you something", he replied. yugyeom furrowed his brows.

"what?"

"don't ask, just get dressed and follow me."

it was a strange request. waves of uncertainty washed over yugyeom. he had just met this boy today, and he was expected to blindly trust him and follow wherever he wanted to take him?

"it's okay", bambam assured him, sensing yugyeom's unsurety. "you'll like it. it's a special thing, something very few people know about. i like you, so i thought i should show you."

it was these words that washed away yugyeom's fear, and he quickly got dressed, pulling a gray hoodie over dark jeans and lacing up his boots. he climbed out the window, following bambam into the night.

they made their way down the fire escape and onto the cobbled road, their boots making small sounds as they walked. the coolness of the air surprised yugyeom, and he shoved his hands into his pockets to keep them warm. bambam blew some air out of his mouth, watching as it turned to a cloud of white.
