Arms sprawled, Minji lay on top of her sheets, eyes fixated on the baby pink ceiling. Her mind was devoid of thoughts. She had been lying motionless for more than an hour, focusing on everything yet nothing. Her mind eventually drifted to the girl she'd met at the library a few days ago. Her height and slender frame was like a Victoria Secret model's. Her dark eyes resembling the earth were calm and mysterious. Silver hair lay long and loose, framing her chiseled face perfectly. Silver had never looked so good on anyone, she thought. Minji felt that there was something different about that girl, not just because of her unique hair colour, but also the aura that the girl exuded. Something about her was strangely magnetic and dangerous. She hadn't felt anything like that before.
But when that girl had smiled, Minji had felt nothing short of warmth. The way her lips lifted upward and one dimple crinkled. The way her teeth were perfectly aligned. Her smile was a ray of sunshine, a stark contrast to her aura.
Minji shook herself from the aimless thoughts and glanced at the clock. It was 5 p.m, and she was supposed to meet Wooyoung at 7 for dinner. It would be her first date with him, and she had been daydreaming about it long before he had finally asked her out. She'd been asked out by guys her whole life, though she had rejected most of them because they hadn't been her type. However, it was different this time. Wooyoung was her type; he was a Christian, had a great personality and was humorous too. Minji felt that the two of them were a match made in heaven. She had already planned her outfit the day before; a white long sleeved buttoned top paired with a slim washed denim skirt and white sneakers. She knew that an hour would be sufficient to get ready, hence she had an extra hour to do absolutely nothing but lie on her bed and stare into space.
The doorbell rang outside, interrupting Minji's thoughts. She wondered who could be at the door since she wasn't expecting any visitors, and her parents were overseas. She leapt off her bed, headed to the main door and checked the peephole. Minji gasped. She hastily unlocked the door and squealed in unison with the visitor.
"BORA!"
"MINJIIIIIIII!"
Both girls hugged each other to the point of suffocation. She was petite but strong and agile, and gave the tightest hugs ever. Bora was Minji's best friend from university and had been overseas for the past six months. At that moment, holding Bora in her arms was one of the best feelings ever. Minji had missed her so much, and would sometimes tear up a little thinking about the good times they had spent together. The pair were inseparable, and having to be apart for half a year had proved to be a challenge. Though they had kept in touch with each other through messages and Skype calls, nothing could beat meeting each other in person.
"Did you miss me?" Bora spouted sassily, wiggling her eyebrows flirtatiously.
"Obviously! Did you come straight from the airport?" Minji replied while bringing Bora's luggage inside the house, then proceeded to lock the gate. "Yeah, I missed my babygirl and wanted to surprise her." Bora smirked. Minji giggled. She loved Bora's personality; loud, energetic, flirtatious, and also a good listener. Bora was a fun person to be around, no matter the season. Though maybe a little too obnoxious at times, she still loved this girl to bits.
"Can I stay over for a few days? I don't really wanna go back home yet. I'll pay rent!" Bora pleaded. Minji squinted her eyes at Bora and said, "You don't need to pay rent, but you better help with the housework while my parents are gone." Bora's eyes lit up, and she screamed "YEAHHHHHHHHH" so loudly that Minji had to cover her ears for fear of her eardrums being ruptured. "Hey! Watch your volume. I missed your voice, but I definitely don't miss you yelling at the top of your lungs."
After Bora had showered, both girls lay side by side on the bed in silence. Neither of them needed to speak, as to simply keep each other company was more than enough. Bora eventually broke the silence. "How's Handong and Siyeon?"
Bora had met the two of them a couple of times through Minji, and had hit off well with them. "Okay, I guess," Minji replied. Bora sat up and looked at Minji with serious eyes. "Hey babe," she said. Minji turned to look at Bora, slightly alarmed by her sudden change in tone. "Yeah?"
"Don't forget your friends when you have a boyfriend."
Minji turned back to face the ceiling and shut her eyes. She realised that she'd been neglecting Handong and Siyeon because of all the time she spent talking to Wooyoung, something that should never have been the case. Her friends had always been there for her, and there was no way that she would give them up just to be with a guy that she liked. She also knew that her friends were the only ones that she could fall back on no matter what happened, and she was extremely blessed to have them. "I won't. I promise," Minji said, feeling a tinge of guilt. Minji's phone suddenly vibrated violently on her bedside table. Someone was calling her. She grabbed it, looking at the caller ID only to see Siyeon's name and face on it.
Siyeon? Siyeon never calls anyone, not even her own parents, she thought.
"Siyeon is calling? Does she know that I'm back? Wow, this is telepathy on another level. I love that woman!" Bora exclaimed, clapping her hands as if she were a seal.
Puzzled, Minji picked up the call. "Siyeon, what's up? You never call."
Sniffles and heavy breathing came from the other side.
"D-d-dong..."
Unable to make out what Siyeon was stuttering, Minji asked again in a more comforting tone.
"Hey Siyeon, it's okay. Everything is okay. Tell me what happened."
Minji heard Siyeon take a few breaths, holding back her sniffling, before barely managing to form the words.
"Nothing is okay. Dong...Dong is in a coma."
