None of this was new to her.It is a part of her.
No, it wasn't just 'a part' of her. It was the essence of her being, the fountain she drinks from; and she would cease to exist without it.
She would be nothing without this.
She lay tucked under the sheets, silver hair strewn across her pillow. Fixating her stone-cold gaze on the bare ceiling above, she concentrated on gathering her thoughts. She then shut her lids tightly.
It was time.
-
She let her feet wander gently over the soils that support new spring growth, white-bells and green wands of grass, until she was there, where tombstones stood erect in silence to her left and right, forming two circular rows. The gravestones were as white as the crystalline snow, rising from the manicured grass. Each one was perfect, polished and exactly the same as all of the others, except the name it bore. Under the steady glow of the full moon, it seemed to have an aura of its own. Her eyes rested on the very first gravestone, allowing her slender fingers to rest gently on the top, then steadily trailing across the others in a clockwise direction, reciting the inscriptions emotionlessly from memory as she went by.
"Kwon Yeo-Jin. Birth; 1993. Death; 2010. Rejection."
"Hae In-Young. Birth; 1991. Death; 2010. Rejection and mockery."
"Chae Jong-Su. Birth; 1991. Death; 2011. Attraction and arrogance."
"Na Bo-Hee. Birth; 1992. Death; 2011. Mockery."
"Hwang Dong-Min. Birth; 1975. Death; 2011. Humiliation."
"Cho Tae-Ran. Birth; 1988. Death; 2012. Humiliation and ignorance."
She continued reciting the inscriptions, moving from the outer ring of gravestones to the inner ring, leaving no name out.
"Chang So-Yeon. Birth; 1967. Death; 2012. Naivety and squandering of money."
"Lee Ga-Hyeon. Birth: 1996. Death; 2013. Falsifying evidence and belittlement."
"Lee Yoo-Bin. Birth; 1982. Death; 2013. Righteousness and impudence ."
She hesitated. She reached out at first, tempted to touch the marble and run her fingers over the black engraved lettering, but decided against it. Clenching her jaw ever so slightly, she continued.
"Kwak Yong-Hui. Birth; 1965. Death; 2012. Adultery and abandonment."
"Kim Il-Song. Birth; 1964. Death: 2012. Alcoholism, neglect and the abuse of a minor."
Completing her recital of both rings of gravestones, Yoohyeon did not utter a word further. Standing motionless in the center of the graveyard, she slowly turned in an anti-clockwise motion, admiring her prized collection with a wry smile. The tombstones were in stellar condition, for dust ceased to exist in this realm. Like God in the Bible, she saw what she had made and found it very good.
She stopped short, smile fading, icy gaze resting on the empty earth in front of her. This was the spot that she had been waiting to fill, the last victim before she could call her collection complete. It was flawless by far, a true masterpiece, and nothing would stand in the way of fulfilling her destiny.
"Soon," she whispered,
"You will be mine."
