Chapter 11
The Johnson's: The Not So Perfect Family
Winter is in and out of consciousness. Half of her body is numb. She can't hear out of her left ear. Her right leg broken in two places. She's going through several surgeries. Only people who knows she's in there is Stacey, Rose, and the sick bastard that saw what happen to her. Winter couldn't really see what was going on at the time of the accident. She could recognize voices. She knew it was James voice. Right now she couldn't talk.
After the surgeries the doctor came and saw Stacey. She was pacing the floor. Anxious and nervous. She was so worried about Winter. She was even more angry with James. How could he do this to her? Then she realized who she's talking about. She knew James wasn't going to just let Winter go that easily. This was clear after tonight. Stacey thought this before the doctor had spoke to her.
"Hey Stacey. How are you holding up?" Dr. Fellows asked.
"I'll be doing a lot better when you tell me what's going on with Winter." Stacey replied.
"She's stabled. Her surgeries went well, but she has to go through therapy for 30 days before going home. Her leg is pretty messed up. As long as she as she has will power she would be okay." Fellows responded.
"Can I see her?" Stacey whispered.
"Yes, the nurse will come and get you when she's done preping her." Dr. Fellows smiled at her.
His smile made Stacey feel better. "Well, what are you going to do with James? You know that he's behind this? I can't believe they would just let him walk free." Stacey yelled with her hands on top of her head.
"Take a sit Stacey. I don't want you to put yourself in here next. There's nothing I could do as far as James. I did the police report. I don't like it, but that's all I can do." Dr. Fellows started to walk away.
"Do you think that he is responsible? I honestly think someone needs to get justice for these girls and Winter. Do it quickly too. I don't know what I might get. She might not be so lucky as she is today." Stacey is worried.
"Off record, yes I think he did it. I think he is capable of doing a lot things. He is the law. They seem to protect each other in that profession. I think Winter should just let things work themselves out. Before she ends up getting hurt. Not just her, but the girls." Fellows said in response to Stacey.
"What am I suppose to tell the girls? Especially Rose? She knows her mother is in the hospital. She's worried Doctor Fellows." Stacey takes a drink of the water out of her cup.
"Don't stress her nor the other girls. Tell them very little. For now at least. Just wait till the weekend. They have a lot going on with school this week." Doctor Fellows looked at his watch. "I have to go. Emergency just came up. We will talk again." He walks off in a hurry.
Stacey was left with more questions than answers. She hated that she was going to have to tell Brooklyn and Monica. Stacey plops down on the chair and tries to see how she's going to tell these girls what's going on. A few minutes goes pass and Stacey starts to fall asleep. Only to be woken by a nurse calling her name. It startled her.
"Mrs. Winds?" The nurse approaches her.
"Yes." Stacey stands up quickly.
"I didn't mean to startle you. Mrs. Johnson is ready to see you now." Nurse said as she got closer.
"Thank you nurse. Have a great night." They parted ways.
Stacey tries to picture Winter in her head. She knows the accident was bad. She just trying to picture in a new light. She opened the door to Winter's room. She didn't look as bad as they described her to be. A little banged up and a cast on her arm. Other than that she looked the same. She's only down the hall from Rose. She was about to sit in the chair but Winter began to speak.
"Girl I'm ready to go home. I know I have to go to therapy for a month. I'm trying to get out of here quicker than that." Winter smiled and laughed a little.
"You will be out here soon. Just relax. At least you're close to Rose. I have to check on her before I leave for the night." Stacey said.
"Stacey you know that we can't let him get away with this right? It was James. I know his voice. He tried to kill me." Winter eyes welled up with tears.
"Winter he's going to get his. Trust me on that. You need to lay low for a while. This is becoming dangerous. What about your safety? Your girls safety? Stacey asked.
Winter just looked at her. "What do you mean what about our safety. We won't be safe until his sick ass is locked away in a cell. Something just has to be done Stacey." Winter squeezed Stacey's hand.
"Okay. Winter I'm going to see Rose now. I have homework to grade. You rest up." Stacey says good night.
She knew that James had to pay for what he did to Winter. It was terrible for him to do something this low. This horrible. It just isn't right. Stacey also knew that Winter wasn't going to let this go. She knew that was more fire under Winter's belt to get justice. Not just for the girls. Now for herself too. She didn't know how to help. Stacey changed her mindset before going into Rose's room.
"Hey Stace. What you still doing here?" Rose said when Stacey walked into the room.
"Hey kid. I was just leaving out and I wanted to see you before I left." She responded.
"How is she doing? They won't let me see her." Rose face was sadden.
"She's resting like you should be doing. Don't worry about her Rose. She's a strong mother." Stacey tries to make Rose feel better.
"Yeah. I know she's strong. That's my mother. I also know my father did it. Probably no one will look in to it and it would be all done and over in a week." Rose rolled her eyes.
"That's what we think. No one knows what's going on. They are looking in to it. Someone will be charged Rose. Do you believe that?" Stacey asked.
"Let's be realistic. He's a police officer.
He doesn't have to do any time. If anything they are going to give him a slap on a wrist. So no I don't believe it." Rose said rolling her eyes."Don't think that way Rose. It will be justice to this. Trust me." Stacey grabbed her arm.
"What are you stupid Stacey. You seriously can't believe that he's going to go to jail. Get real Stacey." Rose yelled.
"Look just calm down." Stacey said giving Rose a cup of water.
"I'm sick of people telling me to calm down. I'm in a hospital. Going to therapy. Pregnant with my with first baby and it's by one of my rapists. My mother just almost died and my father is ruining my life and he's not right his self. Don't tell me to calm down. Matter of fact get the hell out." Rose throws the cup of water across the room.
