I sat on the large hard cushion arm chair, slumped down tapping my cigarette pack on the arm rest. I looked around at the book cases and plaques that adorned the walls. I heard the door open from behind me and I quickly looked around. It was Doctor Hamilton. His red bow tie was perfectly symmetrical, and matched his burgundy shoes. His gray hair was thin on his round head and the round glasses didn’t help him at all. He walked over to the desk and sat on the large worn brown chair. I watched his every move from where I was sitting. I did distrust people too much, especially those who work at hospitals. Apparently that was part of my problem, that and the hallucinations of course. I could not forget those, no matter how much I wanted too.
Doctor Hamilton leaned down in his chair, his hands folded on his pot belly. For a few moments he simply stared at me, while I stared back. I felt my eye twitch as he let out a loud sigh. He flipped open the file that was already on his desk.
“Why must we keep going through this Mr. Bell?” I bit the inside of my cheek as he took out his pen, writing something down.
“You’re the doctor, you tell me.” I spat, still glaring at him. He folded his hands on the file and softly nodded. He let out a low sigh and I quickly turned my head to one of the book shelves. I thought I heard a book fall from it, but when I looked they were perfectly put away, as always. He slowly closed the file and leaned back again.
“Well, you know the drill.” He said motioning towards the door. As he did the door opened. I felt my eye twitch again, not even needing to turn around to know who was now standing behind me. It was Nurse Kelly, holding the signature hospital gown. I faked a grin and stood up quickly, causing Nurse Kelly to take a quick step back. I turned around and looked at her pretending to be confused as why she would be so jumpy. I saw a big Man in White standing at the door. Man in White is what I called the security guards that watched the wards. They were the ones who subdued the patients who get a bit rowdy. He glared at me and I held my hands up.
“Sorry.” I said sarcastically as Nurse Kelly grabbed my arm and pulled me out of the room. I didn’t fight the forceful way Nurse Kelly basically dragged me out into the hallway. Her long nails dug into my thin bicep. The Man in White followed us towards my room. She opened the door and let go of my arm, almost throwing me into the room. She handed me the gown and crossed her arms, standing at the threshold of the door. I steadied myself and moved my hair out of my face. She motioned to the gown,
“You know what to do.” She said, arms still crossed. I started to laugh as I turned my back on her.
“Didn’t know you felt this way Nurse Kelly,” I said taking my shirt off. “You could have at least bought me dinner first.” I joked, glancing back. She frowned, obviously not pleased with my try at lightening the mood. I threw my shirt on my bed and looked around. I was pleased to see everything was just as I left it, painting still up, clothes still in my drawers. I looked down at my now bare chest. I was about as thin as Chloe was, though I didn’t purge like she does. I gently moved my thin fingers on my ribs, I saw a giant bruise and wondered where I had got it from. I heard Nurse Kelly clear her throat, getting my attention back. I quickly resumed changing, stripping off my jeans and throwing them on the bed as well. I pulled on the gown and tied it all the way up the back. I looked even skinner in the light blue medical gown. I sat on the end of my bed as Nurse Kelly confiscated the clothes I had just taken off. She motioned me to follow her out the door and I looked at her confused.
“I thought I had to be confined to my room.” I said standing up. She chuckled.
“Please, for you that would be a reward, how about you try and communicate with your peers.” I glared at her blonde head as I walked behind her towards the rec room. As soon as we got there she motioned to the others as she walked towards the nurse station. I fiddled with the cigarette pack in my hand as I walked over and sat next to Alex Thomas on the long couch against the wall with the windows.
