the cards offer a truth,
secrets you've never shared
a destiny to explore
only if you dared

"this will work?" he inquired,
the woman's face said not yes nor no
"the cards are ice, your hands the fire
take the ones you desire so"

he pulled a card, the first to be warm,
flaking paint, red and blue and gold
"The Lovers," she crooned,
"A common card, used and old."

he pulled another, hot to the touch,
singing his fingers, marking his skin
"The Devil," she murmured,
"Lust versus love, a conflict begins."

his final card burst into frames,
ashes coat the table and shelf
"Judgement Reversed" she sighed,
"you refuse to listen to yourself"

"what does that mean?" he inquired.
"your heart and head do not agree,"
the witch began, expression grim
"but your true love will set you free"
