You had a bad feeling.

For days, since Fury met with you to discuss the details of your next assassination, the bad feeling had plagued you. You were used to guilt, and remorse (that came in the job description for doing SHIELD's dirty work). But this was different; it was intuition.

So, when a man came bounding into your's and Bucky's room, a gun in each hand, you were hardly surprised.

It was too late to do anything to stop him. But you could do something to make sure the man you loved didn't get killed. You launched yourself at Bucky, covering his body with your own.

Bullets rained down on you, each shot echoing throughout Stark Tower. You heard a grunt. Someone - Steve, took care of the assassin swiftly, his body thrown across the room.

You hugged onto Bucky with whatever strength you had left. You didn't know how many times the man had shot you, but it was enough to paint almost the entire bed red.

"Y/N!" Bucky's eyes were wide, and he lowered you onto the bed. There was so much blood, the sheets looked almost black. "No-No."

"Buck..."

"What did you do? What did you do?" Bucky was trying to staunch the bleeding, covering your wounds with his hands. As though he could stop the life from leaking out of you.

"Bucky..."

"Get medical up here now!" Bucky shouted at Steve, who was standing frozen in the doorway.

"Buck-"

"Now!"

You were fading fast, Steve's voice a distant thing as he called for help. Bucky continued to put pressure on your wounds, his eyes turning wild.

"I'm sorry," you rasped, blood already filling your mouth and staining your teeth. "I couldn't let you die."

Bucky finally looked at you, really looked, and the realization of your current state resonated in his eyes. You watched, unable to do anything, as it broke him.

You whispered what you knew would be your last words, "I love you."

"Just breathe, Y/N," Bucky pleaded. "Please... Breathe."

But you had already stopped.
