You knew going on a mission with your ex was a bad idea.
He was a cocky, arrogant prick who thought the world fucking revolved around him. You were beyond pissed that Cap had asked you to go on this particular mission with him, Tony, Nat, Wanda, and Bucky. It was bad enough that Tony had cheated on you, but just a week earlier he finally broke the silence and invited you out for coffee—and then never showed. You waited an hour for the bastard. But he didn't show. Thus began another two days of crying and feeling sorry for yourself, because fuck, he didn't even remember when you finally confronted him about it. He didn't remember. It obviously didn't mean anything to him. You didn't mean anything to him.
And now you were on a mission together, and the tension was so thick you thought you might suffocate from it. You couldn't even look at him without feeling such intense anger that your body shook from it. And his voice... His voice made you see red. So you did as you had been trained to do: focus your anger. Sharpen it. Use it to get the fucking job done so you could go home and drown your sorrows in a half-eaten Ben and Jerry's and whatever was left of the shit-ass bourbon you'd purchased the night before. But Tony was proving to be a very difficult presence to ignore (especially over comms).
"This is what I get for joining a super secret boy band."
You rolled your eyes, knocking an enhanced soldier's legs out from under them with a fluid movement. The second your fist connected with the man's face, his eyes rolled to the back of his head. It wasn't exactly a clean move, but, hell, you were having a rough night. A rough year, if you were being honest. And the fact that some ragtag team of idiot scientists replicated the super soldier serum (albeit a watered down version), and was trying to murder you and your friends wasn't exactly improving your mood.
"Not exactly the time, Stark," Cap gritted out as he hurled his shield at another one of the serum-enhanced soldiers. "We need to get through that door. Whatever these assholes are trying to protect—"
"Language!"
"— I think we all know it can't be good."
"Agreed," you said through your teeth as you shoved a women who was trying to grab your hair into a wall so hard you heard something within her crack. "Bitch."
"I've never seen you so eager to get through a mission, Y/N," Tony drawled. "Do you have plans or somethin'?"
"Actually, Tony, I do. Not that it's any of your business." Finally, Nat reached the door. She implemented some sort of code, and let out a relieved sound when the door unlatched.
"I'm in!"
"And who is the lucky bastard you caught your attention?" Tony's voice sounded slightly bitter through the comms, and you felt a slippery wave of satisfaction go through you.
You had just begun to stitch your life back together when Tony texted you. Things were looking up, looking better than they had in months, and then he had to ruin it. Each minute you waited for him in that cafe tore open the wound you had been holding closed, until the blood was flowing out of you and he wasn't there. He wasn't there to put you back together.
You turned to where Tony had just blasted someone with his repulsor. He flipped his mask up so you could see his face, and, for once, you felt nothing. Nothing but emptiness as he gave you that smirk that used to make you blush all over. You were done with him. And you wanted him to know that. "I'd really appreciate it if, for once, you focused on doing something useful instead of wasting my time with your recycled jokes and mind-numbing presence."
Then you turned and followed Nat through the now-open door, not even bothering to wait for Tony's response. You had a mission to focus on. Tony didn't matter. Not to you. Not anymore.
