When we pulled into the driveway, my dad was standing at the door. My dad was tall and skinny and quite the cowboy. We loved the country so we didn't live in town, but I didn't mind. I just wished that there were a few more kids my age to hang around with here. My dad came up to Emmett's truck and I knew this couldn't be good, but hopefully it wouldn't be bad either.
"Well, I see you two are friends again," my dad said.
"Actually, sir, we're together," Emmett stated.
"Oh really? Since when? She never told me about this so it must be pretty recent," my dad said, emphasizing the word pretty.
"Today, sir," Emmett said trying to be polite.
"You do know how to ride a horse, don't ya son?"
"Yes sir, I still remember." Emmett replied.
We all knew that was a trick question though because when I was little my dad would take Emmett, Cleo and I up into the foothills all the time on horses. Often time, we would camp and I would bring my fiddle. We would sit around the campfire at night and I would play it for entertainment. Those were the good times.
"Alright, you got time to go on a horse ride with me son?" my dad asked. I snapped back to reality. Oh how I missed the good old days.
"Uh, yes sir. I think I got a few minutes," Emmett replied.
"All right. Lets get you a horse saddled."
"Uh, no, dad. Emmett, you don't have to do this," I said with a worried look on my face.
"Yes he does. Now come on, lets go," my dad said hitting the truck door twice making it thud annoyingly. I got out and walked beside Emmett. There was no way that I could let this happen. I just got Emmett back and now my dad was going to scare him off again. Just great, not.
"You don't have to do this Emmett," I said again, running to catch up with him.
"Yes I do," Emmett replied with determination set in his voice as we followed my dad to where the horses were. Just great, now I really was going to lose him.
"You have no idea what you're getting yourself into," I warned.
"I've got an idea," Emmett replied.
"Uh, well good luck. Hopefully you don't die, and you can't say I didn't try to warn you," I said, stopping to turn around and head into the house. I assumed that they were going to ride up into the foothills, so they were going to be a while. It was my ex-best friend, Cleo's birthday today. I didn't want to be enemies anymore. It wasn't worth it. Ever since we were three we celebrated our birthdays together because our birthdays were only two days apart.
I went entered the kitchen and decided to make mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken, and corn. I knew really well how to cook because my mom taught me before she and my older brother died in the car crash when I was twelve. That was already a hard year for me in life because I was trying to figure out who I was and who I wanted to be. So when my mom died, I just lost all hope because she was like one of my best friends, and my brother was always there for me.
As soon as I got my food, I sat down and and ate in silence. I moaned in delight. This was my favorite meal, and we had something similar every Friday night to celebrate the fact that it was the weekend. But tonight, I was eating it alone.
I couldn't stop thinking about the fact that it was Cleo's birthday and now that Emmett explained what had happened, I felt really bad. I walked over to the sink and rinsed my plate off. Then, I walked to the oven, turned it on 350 degrees and put it on bake. I mixed cake mix together and stuck it in the oven setting the timer for fifteen minutes.
I went to sit down but then realized that the remote was clear at the other end of the couch. So like a lazy person, I laid down and stretched as far as I could to get it so I wouldn't have to get up. Finally after a little bit of scooting, I managed to grab it and watched one of my favorite shows on netflix. It was one of the best shows ever.
I got halfway through the episode when the timer went off. I got up, paused it, and checked the cake. It was done. It was easier to frost when it was cold, so I put it in the freezer to cool off faster. I went and looked out the window and saw a storm coming, then finished the episode on netflix.
When I turned it off, it sounded like someone was in one of the back bedrooms. I was suddenly really nervous and my body felt as if it were filled with electricity. I grabbed the butter knife that I had originally grabbed to spread frosting onto the cake and walked around the counter to see who was in one of the back bedrooms. When I snuck to the back bedrooms, I peeked around the corner and saw two black figures. One looked like a full grown man, and the other looked like a boy who was almost a man. But the room was fairly dark so I couldn't see their faces. As they started to turn around I quickly slipped out of the doorway holding up the butter knife. I heard them walking my way and I had to hurry and debate whether to run and find help or fight and try to not to die.
