It was two in the morning the attack took place.
There were screams sounding about my dormitory. Other people around me started to wake up. What was going on?
"RINGGGGGGGG."
It was the emergency alarm. Blaring all around the base to alert danger. But this sound was different; less like an alarm and more like a buzz. I remember hearing this somewhere but it wouldn't come to mind. The leaders warned us about a fire practice a few weeks ago but a base guide would have come to collect us by now.
"What's going on?" someone asked.
I recognized the voice as Daniela, my best friend. I let out a sigh of relief upon knowing she was alright. She had the tendency to wake up in the middle of the night and sneak into the kitchens for a snack.
"I'm not sure," I say while putting on my glasses.
I have jet black hair and light tawny eyes. Tiny freckles litter my nose and cheeks. As I being one of the oldest I had to take charge and see what was happening. I spring out of bed and make my way towards the dormitory door.
Over to the right of our door was a large group of masked men. Slung over their shoulders were guns. Big guns. I desperately wanted to run. But I kept watching.
They started bashing on one of the dormitory doors next to us. with each bang, the walls of our dormitory shook. With one more loud bash, they had made it in. In a few seconds time, the men reappeared from the room. Dragging behind them were three people. As they walk out into the moonlight I could make out who the people were.
I remembered where I had heard the sound before. In human defense class. The teacher had made us listen to the different kinds of emergency alarms. This alarm meant it was an attack. The humans had found us.
One of the people the men were dragging was Valerie. Daniela's sister. As if on Que Daniela sprinted up beside me. She looked straight at Valerie. I know how much Daniella loves her. I didn't want her to notice who the men were holding. I desperately tried to jump in front of the door. But she had seen her. Daniella started screaming and screeching. The men whipped their heads around to look straight at us.
I pull Daniela off the ground from where she lay screaming.
"Everybody listen!" I demand urgently.
No one was listening. The sound of muffled whispers and hisses were getting on my nerves.
"EVERYBODY LISTEN!" I scream. The room fell silent. The only sound was the faint screams and shouts coming from outside.
"I want everybody to follow Daniela down here ok?" I say.
"Daniela go," I mutter. She continues to whimper on the ground.
"Daniela if you do not go know we are all going to get shot," I say through clenched teeth. This seems to snap her out of it as she collects herself. After wiping her eyes on her sleeve she opens the trap door.
"I will be right behind you," I reassure her. She immediately jumps down into the tunnel and walks into the darkness.
I start to urge all the other children into the tunnel. In a few minutes all children had made it safely into the tunnel.
The men had begun to bash on the door. It was only a matter of seconds that they would have broken it down. I desperately wanted to get myself out of here. But I had to try and save Valerie and the others.
* * *
I had decided to hide under one of the beds and wait until I could jump out and attack.
Because we are consistsntly hunted down by P.I.N. (Powerful Investigation Numbers). Our secret base has trained in fighting the humans ever since we could walk, or whenever we arrived here.
Bang! The men have knocked down the door. They crept into the dorm. Valerie and the others were nowhere in sight. I craned my neck to see where they were. They were tied onto one of the lamp posts with pieces of cloth tied around their mouths, ankles and wrists.
The men were getting closer to the bed I was under.
I realised I was holding my breath. Without thinking I let out a large puff of air. The two men turned their heads towards me. They walked over to the bed.
Stupid, stupid, stupid! I thought to myself.
I grabbed one of the bed legs and swung myself out from where I was hiding.
My swing hit the man off balance. I scrambled onto my feet. The other man leapt forward and threw a punch right at my face. I ducked and missed it by a millimetre. I punched as hard as I could in the man's direction. To my dismay he moved out of the way just in time.
By that point, the other man had stood up. He charged towards me, knocking me into the wall. I grasped my side in agony. Blood seeped from a cut in my hip. Despite the pain I still had energy. I got up and ran towards the men kicking one of them right in the rib cage. He staggered onto the floor. The other man moved towards me. Just as he was near enough I released a powerful punch right into his jaw.
But he was a lot stronger than I was.
He grabbed me by my neck and began choking me.
I was losing air.
Everything was blurry.
Just as I thought I was well truly gone I heard a bang. The man released his grip on my neck and fell to the ground. It was Daniela, holding a lamp. I sat up and took deep breaths. The other man scrambled up and ran through the broken down door and outside.
He snatched the three captives and threw them into a black van that was parked just next to the entrance of the base. Before we could go after him he started the engine and drove off into the night.
Tears were streaming down Daniela's face. The humans had attacked.
