Weeks went by without any sign of Steve

Weeks went by without any sign of Steve. The star-spangled man in red, white, and blue had disappeared once again, much to Janie's dismay. Admittedly, the last time they had seen each other was a little unconventional, but what had started out as one of the shittiest days of the last year had quickly turned into one of the best evenings of her life.

Janie couldn't remember the last time she'd been comfortable around another human being. Granted, she barely knew more about Steve than what she'd heard about him on TV and from fellow students and he surely knew way more about her from reading her file before the Incident. It hadn't stopped her from enjoying his company, even if it was just for one evening.

She didn't quite understand his intrinsic need to be nice to her, but could only assume he felt somewhat bad for her. He'd seen her cry more than he'd seen her laugh and he'd had to save her on multiple occasions, even during times when she didn't know what she needed saving from.

It was nice, being able to be in close proximity to somebody who didn't want anything from you but your company. In all fairness, Janie assumed being a world-class superhero could be as much a lonely job as it was exhilarating. Steve was an undeniably handsome man, but being Captain America undoubtedly sent hoards of women trailing after him wherever he went. Women who only cared for him because of his status or his bank account.

Janie wasn't listening to the lecturer in front of her. She'd changed her major the day after the incident and hadn't looked back since, but listening to the professor going on and on about European law at 8:30 in the morning didn't exactly pique her interest.

She sipped her cup of steamy coffee, clasping her hands around the cup to keep her fingers warm. The lecture rooms weren't exactly warm and with Christmas break coming up very soon, the weather would only continue to get colder with each passing day.

Every once in a while, Janie's mind would wander toward her father. She considered whether or not she should contact him before Christmas, biting her pen absentmindedly while her thoughts consumed her as she weighed her options. It wasn't until everyone started packing up their belongings that she realized her class was over, and she hadn't learned a damn thing.

Instead of taking the subway, Janie decided to walk home. The ground was covered in a thin layer of snow and it was already getting dark by the time she ventured out onto the streets.

After quickly stopping at the nearest grocery store to pick up a few essentials like toilet paper and toothpaste along with fresh vegetables and some fruit, Janie made her way to her apartment. Once there, she set down the bags and began digging through her backpack's front pocket in search of her keys. Somehow, among the discarded pens, empty biscuit wrappers, chapstick, and loose change, the bundle of keys had slid down to the bottom of all the crap she carried and it was now tangled up with a pair of broken earphones that had been in there since early September.

"Do you need any help?"

Janie turned her head around, momentarily forgetting all about the keys covered in biscuit dust and wrapped up in black plastic string as they dropped in the snow by her feet.
