"Linda! Linda!" Jaysen yelled as he ran around the perimeter. For the moment, there were no pursuers, but that could change at any time. The spell was complete, but it was only effective if the king's soldiers were close to it, and Jaysen couldn't use it to his advantage either because it would knock him out as well. His only chance to find Linda was to get her attention before someone found him. He had sent his men to a rendezvous point further on so they wouldn't have to fight while waiting for him. As far as he knew, they were all still alive, but that could change if they decided to come back for him. He began shouting again.
Something rustled in the bushes behind him, and he pulled out his dagger as he spun around. Standing next to a small tree, and just inside the heather border, was Morgan.
"He's over here!" she shouted in the direction of the cottage. She turned and said to him, "You seem upset. Did something happen? I mean, other than what seems to be the entire army being sent to crush us?" She grinned lopsidedly. He rolled his eyes.
"Actually, yeah, something happened. I'm worried that Linda's not going to like it." Just then Pumpkin came trotting up behind him looking completely nonchalant. Morgan's eyes widened and Jaysen shook his head. "That's the something."
Morgan looked between him and the cat several times before facepalming. "Linda's not gonna like-- "
"I'm not gonna like what?" Linda said as she came running up to Morgan. At first she didn't see the cat and just looked puzzled at Jaysen. It seemed to hit her all at once. "Pumpkin! what on earth are you doing on that side of the barrier? You can't come back across now, the spell is complete," she cried, almost angry, tears in her eyes.
Morgan held her arms out and pulled Linda into a hug before she could try to run through the border to her cat. It wouldn't solve anything and could only make things worse for everyone involved. Jaysen picked the black furball up and stroked his fur, worried by the sudden burst of emotion coming from the generally pacified woman.
"I don't want to rush things along, but the soldiers could find me at any moment and I need to get back to my men. If you like, I can take the cat with me and protect him until he can return at some future point," Jaysen ventured to say.
Linda looked up from Morgan's arms, momentarily stunned. "You would do that? For me?"
Jaysen nodded. "Of course, M'lady. I'd be honoured to keep company with such a noble creature as this. He will serve as a wonderful addition to our band of men." Linda looked almost ready to cry again. Morgan just smiled with a knowing look and nodded.
"I think it's a wonderful idea, Jaysen. Thank you."
