The alert from his phone made Avi jump a little bit. He looked up from the lyrics he was writing to see that he his battery was at five percent. He sighed, and debated internally whether he should finish the song or go charge his phone. He glanced down at the song and realized it was really cheesy and repetitive, frustratingly running a hand through his hair. He balled up the piece of paper and threw it on top of the pile of other imperfect songs at the corner of his desk.
He'd been doing this all day. He woke up earlier than usual, and basically drank two gallons of coffee to keep him awake. After recovering from his tuberculosis, he knew he was holding everyone back. Nobody wanted to strain himself even though he knew he was fine, and so tour would be starting in a few days. He wanted to get right back into work and write and arrange and produce and satisfy everyone. That's just who he was in life; he was a satisfier. He liked making people happy.
Avi knew that old saying: you can't please everyone. Well, that's just what he strived to do. He had a natural ambition in his heart, and when he got that fire in his eyes nobody could stop him. That's why Kirstie let him write his little heart out. She popped in and out of the little room which they called their office, and made him some lunch, told him he had a phone call, gave him another mug of coffee. She had been with Avi long enough to know that when he writes, it's a whole-day affair.
This just happened to be one of his bad days. Usually, he could bang out half a dozen songs all in a row. But he had bad writer's block. There didn't seem to be any emotion behind his words, no inspiration.
He had written a few good pieces, but that's all they were. Brilliant pieces, clever lines, nice melodies. But they weren't complete songs. He could probably jigsaw it all together, but they just didn't seem to fit right, and it would be sloppy.
So Avi just sighed and went to look for his phone charger. He rummaged around his drawers and in the outlets in the room, but he couldn't find it. He stopped looking when he opened a drawer and saw something written by Kirstie. It was from a few months ago, when she was brainstorming song ideas. It was just a sheet of paper with a simple verse on it. It looked like she drew a line through it, even though he thought it was beautiful.
"I memorized the skyline just for you
A deep shade of the darkest blue
And you took it and made it your own
Etched it into the clouds so I'd never be alone"
He didn't know who it was for, or what it was about, but he still smiled. He folded it and tucked it into his pocket. Her handwriting was smudged and the paper was crumpled, just like all of his other songs were. But he knew that it could turn out to be a brand new song for Pentatonix.
Avi stood up to go look for his phone charger, realizing that it was probably in the living room since he charged his phone there the night before while watching a movie with Kirstie. When he entered the room, he was about to tell Kirstie about what he found, but stopped in his tracks when he saw what she was doing.
She had changed from her own shirt to one of his, a plaid flannel. She was sleeping on their large couch, her glasses still on, her hair in a messy bun. Dragon was snuggled up next to her and she had a slight grin on her face. She looked so small and comfortable, so safe.
Avi stood there, his mouth open, staring at her and how beautiful she was to him. It made him feel a little creepy after staring at her for a few minutes. So he went over to the outlet where his charger was still plugged in, and hooked his phone up to it. Then he carefully adjusted himself behind her, wrapping his arms around her body, ensuing the big spoon position that he was accustomed to by now. Dragon rolled over in his sleep, making Avi chuckle. He nuzzled his nose into Kirstie's hair and soon fell asleep with her, thinking one final thought before letting exhaustion take over.
I think I just found some inspiration.
